Diversity and habitat preference of aquatic insects along the longitudinal gradient of the Macaé River basin, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Abstract: Diversity and habitat preference of macroinvertebrates were studied in Macaé River basin, Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil, along its longitudinal gradient. We selected stream reaches corresponding to 1 st , 2 nd , 4 th , 5 th and 6 th orders. A Surber sampler was used to collect four macroinvertebrates samples of each substrate (sand, litter in pool areas, stones, and litter in riffle areas) during the three sampling periods, defined based on the rain regime: April (end of the rainy season), July (dry season), an… Show more

“…Others, even occurring throughout all gradient, presented higher abundance in certain altitude, such as Hagenulopsis diptera in altitudes of 1200-1300 m. Hagenulopsis is a characteristic genus of low rhithral regions (Da-Silva 2002). Baptista et al (2001b) found Hagenulopsis occurring only on the 6 th order reach at lower altitude areas of the Macaé River, RJ. However, this taxon occurred in almost all the rivers studied in PNSB and it was more abundant in the upper region of the altitudinal gradient.…”

“…All orders of insects, including the immature stages of EPT, are of great importance in the study of the communities in low to medium order lotic habitats (Baptista et al, 2001). In these systems, EPT insects normally exhibit high species richness and are essential links in the transfer of energy through the food chain (Bispo, 2002).…”
