Comparative analysis of cranial suture complexity in the genus Caiman (Crocodylia, alligatoridae)

Abstract: The variation in degrees of interdigitation (complexity) in cranial sutures among species of Caiman in different skull regions was studied by fractal analysis. Our findings show that there is a small species effect in the fractal dimension of cranial sutures, but most variation is accounted for by regional differentiation within the skull. There is also a significant interaction between species and cranial regions. The braincase sutures show higher fractal dimension than the facial skull sutures for all three … Show more

“…Cranial sutures have been investigated in developmental and pathological anatomy (Oudhof, 1982;Cohen and MacLean, 2000), in comparative anatomy (Long, 1985;Monteiro and Lessa, 2000), in biomechanical issues (Jaslow, 1990), and in physical anthropology (Anton et al, 1992;Gilbert and Palmqvist, 1995;Verhulst and Onghena, 1997), the latter not least in terms of age-related changes (Todd and Lyon, 1924;Workshop of European Anthropologists, 1980;Perizonius, 1984;Meindl and Lovejoy, 1985;Key et al, 1994). While it seems that there may be age-related changes in terms of ossification and the degree of obliteration of the sutures, it has been difficult to develop unbiased and definite criteria for using the sutures in age determination (Perizonius, 1984;Meindl and Lovejoy, 1985;Hauser et al, 1991;Key et al, 1994).…”

“…Fractal dimensions of cranial sutures have been calculated before, but on other species or on very limited materials (Long, 1985;Hartwig, 1991;Long and Long, 1992;Gilbert and Palmqvist, 1995;Monteiro and Lessa, 2000). The purpose of this paper is to calculate and analyze the fractal dimensions of the human sagittal and coronal sutures on material with known age and sex, in order to see whether a clear relationship could be established between suture fractal geometry and age.…”

“…These qualitative correlations have been supported experimentally by several further studies (Herring and Teng, 2000;Markey et al, 2004Markey et al, , 2006Sun et al, 2004). However, while methods have been proposed to quantify suture shape (for example, using linear measurements [Jaslow, 1990;Anton et al, 1992;Rafferty and Herring, 1999] and fractal analysis [Hartwig, 1991;Monteiro and Lessa, 2000;Nicolay and Vaders, 2006]), none of the functional studies listed above includes a quantitative assessment of suture shape to further refine what is meant by ''interdigitated'' and ''abutting. '' Our goal here is to provide a quantitative link between sutural morphology and the strains they experience.…”

“…First, only one aspect of suture shape is described and measured. That is, the focus has only been on either the ectocranial expression of a suture (i.e., its linear trace on the surface of the skull) (see Jaslow, 1990;Hartwig, 1991;Anton et al, 1992;Monteiro and Lessa, 2000;Lynnerup and Jacobsen, 2003;Nicolay and Vaders, 2006), here termed ''sinuosity'', or on its cross sectional shape (i.e., an ecto-to-endocranial slice through the suture) (see Rafferty and Herring, 1999), here referred to as ''interdigitation.'' To describe and quantify the morphology of a suture more completely, the cross-sectional shape of a suture as well as its surface trace must be zconsidered.…”

“…C. latirostris possui um crânio mais robusto e com suturas cranianas mais bem definidas do que C. crocodilus e C. yacare (Monteiro & Lessa, 2000), possivelmente por sua preferência alimentar por itens mais duros, como moluscos (Diefenbach, 1979). Alligatoridae ainda engloba os gêneros Melanosuchus (com apenas uma espécie: M. niger) e Paleosuchus (com duas espécies: P. palpebrosus e P. trigonatus) (Magnusson et al, 1987).…”
