New records of larval hostplants for ithomiinae butterflies (Nymphalidae)

Abstract: Seventeen new records of larval hostplants are given for Ithomiinae butterflies (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae) in southeastern Minas Gerais, and one in Brasília, DF. At the present state of knowledge, generalizations about larval feeding habits of these insects may be premature.

“…Butterflies of the subfamily Ithomiinae (Nymphalidae) are diverse members of Neotropical forests (DeVries 1987). Their larvae feed on plants in the families Solanaceae and Apocinaceae, and the genus Hyposcada feeds on Gesneriaceae (DeVries 1987; Costa 1999). Ithomiines are sensitive to microhabitat conditions (Willmott & Mallet 2004), especially to microclimate (Brown & Freitas 2002).…”

“…In particular, we evaluate the accuracy of an equation that describes body weight as a function of the length by examining the residuals (i.e., the differences between the observed and the estimated values) of the regression analysis, and determine analytically the minimum time interval that must be maintained between consecutive measurements of individual caterpillars. (Costa 1991(Costa , 1999; frass were removed and leaves and moisture were replenished every other day. At intervals of 2-4 days larvae were measured (body length to the nearest 0.5 mm) and weighed (to the nearest 0.1 mg); at the end, we obtained 173 pairs of measurements (length and weight) for the 28 larvae (1-12 pairs of values per larva; length range: 2-27 mm; weight range: 0.2-241.5 mg).…”
