A new study method of microhabitat structure of small mammals

Abstract: The variables in habitat studies are usually transformed in such a way that they become abstractions and intuition is lost. We tested a new method for the analysis of habitat using data collected in a grid laid at the "restinga de Maricá", in Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil. Thirty-seven microhabitat variables were measured at each trap station. We assume that these variables characterize the microhabitat structure at the moment when measurements were taken. The data are transformed in 3 ways: (1) the averages of… Show more

“…Vegetation can affect patterns of local species diversity and abundance in reptile assemblages, and vegetation height is the variable which has been demonstrated as being the most important in affecting the distribution of vertebrates species in restinga ecosystem (e.g. Rocha and Bergallo 1997, Cerqueira and Freitas 1999, Sawchik et al 2003, 2007. The vertical increase in the height of vegetation tend to increase the diversity of flora and fauna of its surroundings (Pereira et al 2001, Assis et al 2004.…”

“…Besides the collection of zoological data, a habitat description was made for every habitat patch describing the microhabitat structure (Scharfe and Schlund 1992;Cerqueira and Freitas 1999). After a general description of the area (e.g.…”
