This article describes the location, anatomy, histology and ontogeny of adult Schwarziana quadripunctata exocrine glands. These glands appear either as individualized organs (salivary gland system and Dufour gland) or as epidermis differentiation (tegumentary glands). Variations in the occurrence and degree of development among colony components with regard to their degree of maturity are also described.Key words: exocrine glands, males, female castes, development. RESUMO Glândulas exócrinas de Schwarziana quadripunctata(Hymenoptera, Apinae, Meliponini)O presente artigo descreve a localização, a anatomia, a histologia e o desenvolvimento das glândulas exócrinas presentes em operárias, rainhas e machos de Schwarziana quadripunctata. As glândulas apresentam-se como órgãos individualizados (glândulas do sistema salivar e glândula de Dufour) ou como simples diferenciações da epiderme (glândulas tegumentares). As variações na ocorrência e no grau de desenvolvimento dos componentes da colônia, ou de seu grau de amadurecimento, também são apresentadas.Palavras-chave: glândulas exócrinas, machos, castas femininas, desenvolvimento.

-The present paper describes the presence, distribution and morphology of the abdominal tegumentar glands of Exomalopsis auropilosa Spinola, Centris fuscata Lepeletier, Epicharis flava Friese and Xylocopa (Neoxylocopa) suspecta Moure & Camargo. The studied bees have epithelial glands (class I) and unicellular glands (class III) distributed dorsally (tergal) and ventrally (esternal) without any pattern that could be correlated to the phylogenetic position. However, there is a tendency toward increased number of glands or more developed glands in the species with some degree of sociality as E. auropilosa and X. suspecta.

ABSTRACT. Occurrence and morphology of tegumentary abdominal glands in Melissoptila richardiae (Bertoni & Scrottky) (Hymenoptera, Apidae, Eucerini). The occurrence and morphology of abdominal tegumentary glands were studied in Melissoptila richardiae. The results showed the existence of class III glandular cells that may appear as isolated units in tergites and sternites III and IV or forming clustered cells in both side of the tergites III and IV. In this late case the secretion is released in reservoirs derived from the tergite intersegmental membranes. The results suggest that this last gland products are lipidic and probably volatile.
