BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Verbal investigation is a critical step of nursing neurological evaluation of neuropathic pain patients, due to its multidimensionality. There are few studies in the literature specifically dealing with this subject. In light of the above, this study aimed at evaluating medical records on clinical topographic characteristics of neuropathic pain reported by patients from a multidisciplinary management center. METHODS: This is a documental, crossover and quantitative study evaluating 50 medical records of patients with established neuropathic pain diagnosis who came for routine consultations between January and June 2014. Data collection form was based on McGill Pain Questionnaire and data regarding age, gender, pain topography and presence of verbal descriptors were analyzed. Data were submitted to statistical analysis and Chi-square test was applied to compare association among variables. RESULTS: There has been prevalence of females (64%), with mean age of 57 years. Most common pain descriptors were from the sensory dimension and were associated to cases where neuropathy affected lower limbs (p=0.006). CONCLUSION: There has been association between topography and pain dimension. Due to the subjectivity and complexity involving neuropathic pain evaluation, it is necessary to understand its clinical manifestations and to prepare the whole multidisciplinary team, especially Nursing, which plays a critical role in verbal investigation of painful patients.

From an academic standpoint, the university format, in general, has been nurturing a "paradigm of expertise" and, consequently, the relationship between specialties has declined. The upshot is that recent college dental graduates have adopted a clinical performance focusing on system parts and their specificities, in detriment to a more comprehensive view of the mouth and of the patient as a whole, with his/her vital, emotional and individual attributes. An interaction between the several different areas of human knowledge is needed imminently to decrease the dichotomy in professional behavior, because the demand for professionals and dental patients interested in a more comprehensive approach are increasing day by day. Patients want to know: "What, in fact, is behind the etiological extrinsic and intrinsic factors that maintain neuropathic pain, recurrent thrush, or persistent halitosis," among other questions, "even under the care of a dentist?" or "Why is this disease affecting me?" There are several issues composing the paradigm of salutogenesis: What are the essential aspects that constitute a healthy individual, overlapping the usual investigation: How to destroy, avoid and quell the pathological agents? A proposed approach is based on salutogenesis, which examines such issues. According to this approach, anthroposophical dentistry includes determinant factors, determinants of health, basic research and the development of oral health promotion, thus connecting dental academia with integrative thinking, while also complementing and gathering information that subsidizes basic research with the primordial concepts on laws governing the parameters involved in the vital processes of nature.

Antecedentes y objetivo: La neuropatía diabética es una complicación de la diabetes tipo 2. Afecta el entorno individual, familiar y social. El objetivo es identificar el perfil epidemiológico del dolor secundario a neuropatía periférica moderada diabética. Materiales y métodos:Estudio transversal descriptivo del dolor utilizando como fuente de información el paciente con neuropatía periférica moderada secundaria a diabetes tipo 2. La severidad de la neuropatía periférica diabética fue establecida con la escala de Michigan. El tamaño de la muestra fue 145. El perfil epidemiológico del dolor evaluado con el cuestionario multidimensional de McGill, alfa de Cronbach de 0,88, evalúa la intensidad de dolor en tres categorías independientes (índice de valoración total -dimensión sensorial, afectiva y evolutiva-, intensidad total general e intensidad total actual) y al interior identifica las características específicas del dolor. El análisis estadístico incluyó promedios, desviación estándar, intervalo de confianza para promedios y porcentajes.
