Background:Preoperative anxiety may lead to peroperative or postoperative problems when not overcome.Aims:The aim of this study was to examine the effect of seeking information and other factors on the anxiety of patients preoperatively.Settings and Design:This study was a prospective, multicentered survey.Materials and Methods:Patients scheduled to undergo surgical procedures under spinal anesthesia, preoperatively evaluated as the American Society of Anesthesia 1–3 and where spinal anesthesia was agreed on beforehand, were included. Patients completed State-Trait Anxiety Inventory Scale-State (STAI-S) survey preoperatively. Patients who sought information were also asked to complete the Amsterdam Preoperative Anxiety and Information Scale survey.Statistical Analysis:Quantitative data were compared with one-way ANOVA with post hoc analysis or Kruskal–Wallis test. Comparison of two groups of parameters showing normal distribution was compared using Student's t-test. Comparison of groups versus anxiety was performed using Chi-square and Fisher's exact tests.Results:A total of 330 patients were included. Average STAI-S scores were similar when evaluated for patients’ demographic data, gender, marital status, place of residence, type of operation, preoperative fasting time, and comorbidities. University graduates were found to have lower anxiety when compared to other educational statuses. Seeking information from the internet caused a significant decrease in surgical anxiety (P < 0.05) although it had no effect on anesthesia-related anxiety. Interestingly, those seeking information had higher information desire levels compared to patients who had not sought other sources of information (P < 0.05).Conclusion:While patients seeking information regarding surgical procedure and/or spinal anesthesia have lower preoperative anxiety levels, their information desire remains high. Apart from detailed information given by the anesthesiologist or surgeon, having access to correct and validated information in multimedia form may decrease anxiety and information desire.

Método: Se trata de un estudio seccional, realizado entre enero y junio de 2017, en un hospital universitario de referencia en cardiología en el nordeste de Brasil. Se evaluaron 174 pacientes utilizando un cuestionario propio y la Escala Hospitalaria de Ansiedad y Depresión (HADS) y calculadas las Odds Ratios para evaluar el riesgo. Resultados: En la evaluación de la ansiedad, fueron factores de riesgo significativos: sexo femenino, años de estudio, ausencia de acompañante, experiencia previa de cirugía cardiaca y la cancelación de la cirugía durante el internamiento. En cuanto a la depresión, se revelaron factores de riesgo: sexo femenino y tiempo de internamiento mayor de 15 días. Conclusión: El enfermero tiene instrumentos disponibles para reconocer la ansiedad y la depresión, incluyendo los diagnósticos de enfermería y las escalas validadas, así como tiene un papel preponderante en la actuación en estos casos. Debe ser un desafío institucional dinamizar el servicio para evitar prolongaciones de la internación y cancelaciones de cirugía por cuestiones estructurales. ÖzetAmaç:Manyetik rezonans görüntüleme (MRG) tibbin tüm alanlarinda hizla gelişen önemli bir tani araci olmuştur. Fakat son çalişmalarda MRG uygulanan hastalarin %37'sinde şiddetli anksiyete ve korku oluşumu raporlanmiştir. Çalişmamizda hastalara video bilgilendirme yaparak anksiyete düzeylerini azaltmayi amaçladik. Gereç ve yöntem: Aralik 2015 ve Şubat 2016 tarihleri arasinda 1.5 Tesla MRG cihazi kullanarak yaptiğimiz çalişmamiza klinisyen tarafindan MRG için yönlendirilen 100 hasta dahil edildi. Hastalar video bilgilendirme grubu (müdahale grubu, n=50) ve kontrol grubu (n=50) olmak üzere ikiye ayrildi. Tüm hastalarin anksiyete düzeyleri, Durumluk-Sürekli Kaygi Envanteri (STAI) ve Görsel analog skalasi (GAS) uygulanarak belirlendi. Daha önce hazirlanmiş olan 3 dakikalik video, müdahale grubundaki hastalara MRG öncesinde izletildi. Video sonrasi bu gruba STAI-S ve GAS tekrar uygulandi. MRG sonrasi ise tüm hastalara belirlediğimiz 7 sorudan oluşan anket uygulandi ve verdikleri cevaplar kaydedildi. Bulgular: Yaptiğimiz araştirma sonunda video bilgilendirme yapilan hastalarla video bilgilendirme yapilmayan hastalar arasinda MRG öncesi anksiyete değerleri arasinda anlamli bir fark bulunmadi. Video bilgilendirme sonrasinda ise bu hastalarin GAS ve STAI-S skorlarinda anlamli bir azalma görüldü (p=0.002). MRG sonrasi yapilan ankette; müdahale grubundaki hastalarin kontrol grubuna göre MR süresi ile ilgili endişelerinin anlamli bir şekilde daha az olduğu (p=0.016) ve beklediklerinden daha iyi geçtiği görüldü (p=0.022). Sonuç: Maliyet kaybina yol açmayan ve zararsiz olan bu uygulamanin hasta anksiyetesini düşürmede başarili olduğu gösterildi. AbstractPurpose: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has been the most important and rapidly developing diagnostic tool in all spheres of medicine. However studies recently reported that severe anxiety and fear occurs in 37% of patients who underwent MRI. In our study, we aimed to reduce patient anxiety by video information. Materials and methods: Between December 2015 and February 2016 using a 1.5 Tesla MRI machine, 100 patients were enrolled in the study. Patients were divided into two groups; video information group (n = 50) and control group (n = 50). Anxiety levels of the patients were determined by applying State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) and Visual Analogue Scale (VAS). A three-minute video, which was prepared earlier, was watched by the patients in video information group before MRI. After video information, STAI-S and VAS were applied again. Subsequent to MRI, all patients were given a questionnaire consisting of seven questions and their responses were recorded. Results: Our research demonstrated no significant difference in anxiety scores of both groups before MRI.
