Redescription of Hanleya brachyplax (Polyplacophora, Hanleyidae) from the south-southeastern Brazilian coast

Abstract: Hanleya brachyplax Simone & Jardim in Rios, 2009 is described in detail. The species occurs off the southeastern and south coast of Brazil (São Paulo and Santa Catarina states) in depths from 250 to 408 m. It differs from its congeners in having uniform white valves; wide intermediate valves; the tail valve with straight profile in the antemucronal area, and a concave postmucronal surface; and a cream-colored girdle, covered by non-articulated spines. An anatomical investigation was also performed, showing… Show more

“…Within Gastropoda, 5 outgroups were selected, based on the references below and on samples examined and listed in Table 1: 1) Patellogastropoda (Lindberg, 1988;Sasaki et al, 2006); 2) Vetigastropoda (Marcus & Marcus, 1960a;Leme, 1973;Salvini-Plawén & Haszprunar, 1987;Simone, 2005b;Simone & Birman, 2006b;Kano, 2007); 3) Neritimorpha Sasaki, 1998); 4) Heterobranchia (Marcus & Marcus, 1965, 1968aHaszprunar, 1985a;Thollesson, 1999); 5) Cocculiniformia (Marshall, 1985;Haszprunar, 1988c;Strong et al, 2003;Ardila & Harasewych, 2005). The root is based only on the polyplacophoran Hanleya brachyplax (Jardim & Simone, 2010b); all remaining outgroups were analyzed operationally as part of the ingroup.…”

“…The excretory system follows the current description proposed by Kaas & Van Belle (1985), but A. gemmata differs in presenting a smaller pair of kidneys, restricted to valve VII, anteriorly connected to nephridial ducts, extending to the valve VI (Jardim & Simone, 2010).…”

“…Compared to the hanleyid Hanleya brachyplax Jardim & Simone, 2010, A. gemmata differs anatomically by the cephalic muscles composed of seven bundles, while H. brachyplax presents only four muscle bundles. The anterior lateral muscles of A. gemmata are absent; the oblique muscles are truly larger; and the straight muscles end in the valve VIII as a unique scar (Jardim & Simone, 2010).…”
