Redescription of Leptophis Cupreus (Cope) (Serpentes, Colubridae), a rare south American Colubrine Snake

Abstract: Leptophis cupreus is redescribed on the basis of 18 specimens, including the holotype. The species is characterized by having a uniformly copper-colored dorsum, which distinguishes it from all other known species of Leptophis. We present photographs of the holotype and a living specimen of L. cupreus, describe and illustrate the everted hemipenis, and plot its known distribution.

“…Near Camp I, a male (USNM 562048) was found during the day hidden among the leaves of Bonnetia maguireorum growing along a stream. A snake {Leptophis cupreus) was photographed the following day (Feb. 11, 1984) as it searched the axils of these plants, presumably foraging for frogs (Albuquerque and McDiarmid, 2010). Two males (AMNH A-131173-74) had been previously located (Feb. 7, 1984) as they called from the leafy part of these plants, and another male (AMNH A-131178) was found 10 days later near Camp Ill also calling from a Bonnetia plant.…”

“…245 km NW of that Panamanian record. It matched well with L. cupreus, in having the following combination of characters: a uniformly copper-colored dorsum, unstriped in adults, color pattern without dark oblique bands and keels absent on the first dorsal scale rows (Albuquerque and McDiarmid 2010). The snake was coiled sleeping at night 1 m above the ground.…”

“…Os hemipênis dos fetos de C. durissus (a partir do estágio 37) exibiram espículas ou espinhos, assim como nos adultos, cujos hemipênis são constituídos por filamentos ou espinhos que maximizam a duração da cópula (MOYES;SCHULTE, 2010;ALBUQUERQUE;Mc-DIARMID, 2010;MOURA et al, 2013).…”
