A new, disjunct, diplopod genus from Espirito Santo, Brasil (Polydesmida: Chelodesmidae)

Abstract: The new generic and specific names Cryptosolenomeris macrogon are proposed for a large chelodesmoid milliped collected at Linhares, Espírito Santo, Brazil, and characterized particularly by the elongated gonotelopodites lacking torsion and apically recurved into a calyciform shield concealing the solenomere; the typical chelodesmoid prefemoral process appears to be either undeveloped or present in a disjunct position. There are no known close generic relatives in the known Brazilian fauna.

“…Eucampesmella was recovered as a sister-group of Telonychopodini, whereas the relationship of Macrocoxodesmus to Rondonaria + Odontopeltis was well-supported. In addition, the structure of the gonopodal aperture in Eucampesmella is similar to the condition found in members of Telonychopodini (Hoffman 1965, 2000, 2005, Pena-Barbosa et al 2013. Concerning the female characters, Macrocoxodesmus marcusi has a modified legpair associated with the vulva, a condition only known in Macrocoxodesmus and Plectrogonodesmus gounellei (Bouzan et al 2019a).…”

“…Catharodesmus ), and Brachyurodesmus (not reallocated to another tribe), placing Macrocoxodesmus and Eucampesmella into the new tribe Macrocoxodesmini (Hoffman, 1990a), and adding the genus Pantanalodesmus Hoffman, to the Telonychopodini. The last additions to Telonychopodini are the genera Vanzolegulus Hoffman, and Dioplosternus Hoffman, (not included in this data set). Finally, Hoffman () provided a new diagnosis for the tribe, characterized mainly by the elongated cyphopod projecting ventrally, the large sclerotized sternum of the male gonopod ring, with or without a prefemoral process in the gonopod, and the presence of rounded paranota without projections.…”

“…– After the Paradoxosomatidae, the family Chelodesmidae is one of the most diverse polydesmidan group comprising 230 extant genera with nearly 450 species [31] , whose distribution now extends to Africa, Middle America and South America [28] . At the present time, there are five living species of the Chelodesmidae recorded in Mexico assigned to the genera Chondrodesmus, Rhaphandra and Eutyporhachis , the latter is also present in the Chiapas Highlands [32] – [33] .…”
