ABSTRACT. Common bean producers in Brazil tend to grow plants as upright as possible. Because the control of this trait involves a large number of genes, recurrent selection (RS) is the best approach for successful plant improvement. Because plant architecture (PA) is evaluated using scores and usually has high heritability, RS for PA is performed through visual selection in generation S 0 . The aim of the present study was to evaluate selection progress and investigate whether this progress varies with the number of selected progenies or the generation evaluated. In addition, the effect of RS for the upright (PA) trait on progeny grain yield (GY) was investigated. Data of progenies S 0:3 and S 0:4 of the fifth, eighth, and twelfth cycles were used. A combined analysis of variance was performed using the adjusted means of the 47 best progenies from each generation and cycle, using two control cultivars as reference. A joint analysis of the two generations used during the evaluation of progenies for the different cycles was also performed. The genetic progress (GP) was estimated by fitting a linear regression equation to the relationship between the adjusted mean of each cycle and the number of cycles. We found that RS was efficient and the estimated GP of the evaluated progenies was 4.5%. Based on the GY heritability estimates, in more advanced generation selection for GY can be successfully performed on progenies. Thus, the selection already done for PA in F 2 could be associated to the most productive progenies.

Resumo -O objetivo deste trabalho foi identificar indicadores efetivos da arquitetura de plantas em feijoeiro, para subsidiar, ou substituir, a avaliação por notas. Trinta e seis linhagens de feijão foram avaliadas quanto aos principais caracteres relacionados à arquitetura de plantas e a caracteres agronômicos, em duas safras. Os experimentos foram realizados em blocos ao acaso, com três repetições, em Coimbra, MG. A análise de trilha indicou que o ângulo de inserção dos ramos, a altura das plantas na colheita e o diâmetro do hipocótilo foram os principais caracteres determinantes da arquitetura de plantas do feijoeiro. O diâmetro do hipocótilo esteve fortemente associado com a nota de arquitetura e possibilitou elevada acurácia e precisão de mensuração. Essa característica é facilmente mensurada e é indicador efetivo da arquitetura de plantas do feijoeiro.Termos para indexação: altura de inserção, colheita mecanizada, diâmetro do hipocótilo, hábito de crescimento, plantas eretas, seleção simultânea. Potential of characters for evaluating common bean plant architectureAbstract -The objective of this work was to identify effective indicators of plant architecture in common bean, to subsidize or replace the evaluation by scores. Thirty-six common bean lines were evaluated regarding the main characters related to plant architecture and agronomic traits, in two harvest seasons. The experiments were carried out in a randomized complete block design with three replicates in Coimbra, MG, Brazil. Path analysis showed that the insertion angle of branches, plant height at harvest, and hypocotyl diameter were the main determinants of plant architecture of common bean. Hypocotyl diameter was strongly related to the architecture score, and allowed high accuracy and precision in measurement. This trait is easily measured and is an effective indicator of bean plant architecture.

ResumoO objetivo desse estudo foi quantificar o ganho genético para produtividade de grãos do programa de melhoramento do arroz irrigado de Minas Gerais, no período de 1998 a 2010. Foram utilizados dados dos ensaios comparativos avançados realizados em quatro localidades diferentes de Minas Gerais. Nem todos os locais foram contemplados em todos os anos agrícolas e para estimativas com maior acurácia, utilizou-se o método de modelos mistos. O ganho genético para produtividade de grãos no período considerado foi de 107,42 kg ha -1 , o que representou uma proporção de 17,88% da estimativa total do progresso. Esse ganho correspondeu ao aumento de 8,95 kg ha -1 ano -1 , ou ainda, aumento de 1,99% em produtividade de grãos por ano. Apesar de o ganho genético ter sido satisfatório, novas alternativas de melhoramento podem ser empreendidas para que o incremento produtivo seja maior nos próximos anos.Palavras-chave: Oryza sativa, progresso genético, obtenção de cultivares, REML/BLUP. For this, data from advanced comparative trials performed in four different sites of Minas Gerais were analyzed. Some sites were not included in all crop years and thus a mixed model methodology was used to obtain more accurate estimates. The genetic gain for grain yield over the period was 107.42 kg ha -1 , which represented a proportion of 17.88% of the total progress estimative. This gain corresponds to an increase of 8.95 kg ha -1 yr -1 or even a 1.99% increase in grain productivity per year. Although the genetic gain has been satisfactory, new alternatives may be applied to improve the rice yield in coming years.
