The objective of this research was to analyze the agronomic performance of rice (Oryza sativa L.) families selected from divergent populations evaluated under different sowing times and locations in 1996/97. The source populations for the families were CNA x 5496, CNA x 6001, CNA x 6063 and CNA x 6102. A hundred families from each cross (population) were evaluated and submitted to five common treatments, which originated a three-replicate 20x20 lattice, grown at two locations, Lavras and Patos de Minas in 1997/98. In the next year (1998/99), the ten best and the ten worst-performing families from each population were again evaluated to confirm the superiority of families selected from the CNA x 5496 and CNA x 6001 populations. A 9x9 lattice with three replications experimental design was used. The two populations selected as the most promising in 1996/97 yielded the best families upon selection. Therefore, in a similar breeding program, it would be advantageous to carry out a high number of crosses, originating a great number of segregant populations, and to select the best ones, concentrating efforts on the evaluation of families extracted from superior populations. Such results confirm the efficiency of selection of source populations for family extraction. KEY WORDS:Oryza sativa, breeding, yield.maize (Pinto, 1996) were conducted under field conditions, which revealed the need to evaluate a large number of families within each population, especially if character heritability is low.

ABSTRACT. The objective of this study was to compare the BLUP selection method with different selection strategies in F 2:4 and assess the efficiency of this method on the early choice of the best common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) lines. Fifty-one F 2:4 progenies were produced from a cross between the CVIII8511 x RP-26 lines. A randomized block design was used with 20 replications and one-plant field plots. Character data on plant architecture and grain yield were obtained and then the sum of the standardized variables was estimated for simultaneous selection of both traits. Analysis was carried out by mixed models (BLUP) and the least squares method to compare different selection strategies, like mass selection, stratified mass selection and between and within progeny selection. The progenies selected by BLUP were assessed in advanced generations, always selecting the greatest and smallest sum of the Comparison of BLUP with selection strategies in F 2:4 standardized variables. Analyses by the least squares method and BLUP procedure ranked the progenies in the same way. The coincidence of the individuals identified by BLUP and between and within progeny selection was high and of the greatest magnitude when BLUP was compared with mass selection. Although BLUP is the best estimator of genotypic value, its efficiency in the response to long term selection is not different from any of the other methods, because it is also unable to predict the future effect of the progenies x environments interaction. It was inferred that selection success will always depend on the most accurate possible progeny assessment and using alternatives to reduce the progenies x environments interaction effect.

Heritability of quantitative traits in segregating common bean families using a Bayesian approach

Genetic parameters for six quantitative traits in the early generation of segregating populations of common beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) were evaluated. A Bayesian approach was used for estimating the variance components, breeding values and broad sense heritability of the quantitative traits under analysis. The Markov Chain Monte Carlo method was utilized to analyze the contribution of genes affecting complex traits. Twenty-four F 3 families were evaluated in the field during 2005 in Santa Catarina, southern Brazil. With regard to the grain yield and yield components, the additive variances were relatively similar to the dominance variances. This result is confirmed by the 95% credible set from the posterior distribution. The mean estimates of broad-sense heritability (H 2 ) varied from 11.5% to 64.2%. The heritability estimates of yield and yield components were higher than the estimates for the number of days until flowering and reproductive period. However, for grain yield, the 95% heritability credible set included the heritability estimates from point of crop duration. The predicted genetic gain reached the highest value for the number of pods per plant (10.95%). Days to flowering and reproductive period had the lowest values of genetic advance. One hundred seed-weight, grain yield and seeds per pod exhibited a similar predictable level of genetic gain: GA = 5.73%, 5.81% and 4.77%, respectively. The Bayesian framework provided information that is useful for a breeding program, since it contributes to the understanding of how quantitative traits are genetically controlled.
