Bamboos are fast-growing plants, with outstanding physical-mechanical characteristics that may be chiefly ascribed to the features and dimensions of their main structural element: their fibers. This study aimed to perform a dimensional description (length, width, lumen diameter and wall thickness) and depict the indices and technical coefficients of fibers of bamboo species that occur in Brazil, through a bibliographical survey. The results showed that the basic density in test stem-specimens of the surveyed species varied between 0.451 g cm-3 and 0.780 g cm-3, what revealed a great variability among them. The average values observed for the fiber dimensions were 2.29 mm for length, 16.4 µm for total width, 6.4 µm for wall thickness and 3.5 µm for lumen diameter. From these data, it was possible to estimate indices and technical coefficients that support good physical-mechanical characteristics of bamboo in the several studied species.

The work aimed to carry out the anatomical and physical characterizations of adult bamboo rods of Dendrocalamus giganteus Munro. So, four rods were collected and sectioned in culms of 2.10 m long. From the ends of the culms were obtained 5.0 cm thick disks that were transformed into samples for anatomical and physical characterizations. In this study, were measured the percentage of fibers, vessels, parenchyma, the moisture content, the basic specific gravity and oven dry specific gravity and shrinkage. The studied bamboo has 0 to 4 vessels mm -2 , with average of 2 vessels mm -2 , with average fiber length of 2.72 mm and 50.72% consists of parenchyma tissue. The moisture content was quantified at 60%, the basic specific gravity in 0.66 g cm -3 , the oven dry specific gravity in 0.83 g cm -3 and volumetric shrinkage in 15.40%. It was observed that the bamboo physical characteristics were influenced by the layout and anatomical elements proportion.

Ces valeurs sont légèrement plus faibles avec celles trouvées par WAHAB et al (2009) sur Bambusa vulgaris en Malaisie (0,53), par CIARAMELLO et AZZINI (1971) sur Dendrocalamus giganteus (0,552) et Dendrocalamus asper (0,599) en Thaïlande. Les bambous occupent une place importante dans la vie de nombreux ménages tant ruraux qu'urbains à Madagascar. Ils sont distribués essentiellement le long des massifs centraux de l'île et dans la forêt humide de l'Est. À partir d'un travail bibliographique, d'entretiens sur le terrain et de travaux de laboratoire, cette étude établit un diagnostic interne et externe de la filière bambou dans les zones orientales de Madagascar, particulièrement les régions Analanjirofo et Atsinanana. Suite à ces diagnostics, des options stratégiques ont été formulées. Plusieurs points forts ont été notés, notamment l'appui d'un organisme spécialisé (Inbar), l'existence de conditions d'extension favorables et la motivation des acteurs qui permettent de présager un fort développement de cette filière dans le futur. De plus, les espèces rencontrées dans la zone possèdent des propriétés physico-mécaniques intéressantes, permettant de satisfaire les besoins pour diverses catégories d'utilisations. Comme contraintes, on peut noter la défaillance des mesures réglementaires, les techniques de transformation archaïques et la faible récupération des sous-produits. La méconnaissance des potentialités exactes, aussi bien en termes de superficie disponible qu'en ce qui concerne les propriétés des chaumes, limite la valorisation du bambou. La relance de la filière bambou garantira en partie la pérennisation d'autres ressources des forêts naturelles. Cette étude a permis de démontrer l'importance des bambous dans les zones orientales de Madagascar. Elle constitue un point de départ pour une investigation plus approfondie.
