Validity of the Brazilian version of the freezing of gait questionnaire

Abstract: OBJECTIVE: To validate the freezing of gait questionnaire (FOG-Q) for a Brazilian population of Parkinson's disease (PD) patients. METHODS: One hundred and seven patients with a diagnosis of PD were evaluated by shortened UPDRS motor scale (sUPDRm), Hoehn and Yahr (HY), Schwab and England scale (SE), Berg balance scale (BBS), falls efficacy scale international (FES-I), gait and balance scale (GABS), and the FOG-Q Brazilian version. RESULTS: 47.7% of PD patients had FOG episodes; this group had worse scores on … Show more

“…Our findings confirm some correlations previously reported between FOG and PD duration and between severity and motor and nonmotor symptoms, thus reinforcing the consistency of these pilot findings. [5][6][7][8][9][10]23 We observed no correlations with other dopa-responsive symptoms such as bradykinesia and rigidity, possibly because our patients underwent assessment in the on state. Conversely, tremor was inversely correlated with FOG, suggesting that both symptoms may have different mechanisms.…”

“…3,4 A few factors related to FOG have been identified, including male sex, severity of PD, lower cognitive performance, longer disease duration, higher depression scores, higher doses of dopaminergic medications, motor complications, and lower tremor scores. [5][6][7][8][9][10] Relationships of FOG with health-related quality of life and pharmacological factors, including exposure to dopaminergic and nondopaminergic antiparkinsonian medication and changes in the on or the off state have been poorly explored. The objective of this study was therefore to assess the prevalence of FOG and its relationship with quality of life and to determine the clinical and pharmacological factors related to its occurrence in a large French cohort of ambulatory PD patients.…”

“…Cognitive assessment involved the application of the mini-mental state examination (MMSE),16 17 Frontal Assessment Battery (FAB),18 19 Executive Interview (EXIT25),20 21 Hachinski scale,15 Katz index of independence in activities of daily living22 and Pfeffer Functional Activities Questionnaire 23. Motor assessment included application of the Giladi’s FOG questionnaire (FOG-Q),24 25 Movement Disorders Society’s Unified PD Rating Scale (MDS-UPDRS),26 27 and HY stage,12 13 all in ‘ON’ and ‘OFF’ states. The presence of lower limb parkinsonism was determined by a two-point difference between upper limb and lower limb scores of bradykinesia, rigidity or postural instability from part III of the MDS-UPDRS 26 27.…”

“…the "OFF" period). Immediately afterwards, the FOG scale by Giladi et al 12,13 , which was recently translated into Portuguese 14 , was applied to all patients during the "OFF" period. Patients were instructed to use their re gular diurnal dose of levodopa and were evaluated with the aforementioned scales after an hour.…”
