Cystic craniopharyngioma: intratumoral chemotherapy with alpha interferon

Abstract: Objective: To assess whether the cystic craniopharyngiomas can be controlled with the use of intratumoral applications of interferon alpha. Method: Nineteen patients with the diagnosis of cystic craniopharyngioma were treated with intratumoral chemotherapy with interferon alpha from January 2002 to April 2006. All patients underwent placement of an intracystic catheter connected to an Ommaya reservoir. Through this reservoir were made applications during chemotherapy cycles. Each cycle corresponded to applicat… Show more

“…[155][156][157][158] Intracavitary interferon-α, which is thought to restrict cyst growth by inducing Fas-mediated apoptosis, was trialed by Cavalheiro et al in a small study of 21 children, all of whom had at least a 60% reduction in net cyst volume. [159][160][161][162] In their report, 11 patients demonstrated greater than 90% volume reduction, 7 had 70% to 90% reduction, 3 had less than 70% reduction, and 2 progressed despite treatment. Side effects were minimal, with new endocrinopathies observed in only 15%, and another 30% developing minor complications such as weight loss, poor oral intake, fatigue, and behavioral abnormalities.…”

“…Ommaya reservoirs have also been placed into the cysts of craniopharyngiomas in order to deliver chemotherapy agents intratumorally. The two agents that have previously been successfully utilized using this method of drug delivery are bleomycin and alpha interferon [51,52].…”
