Epidemiological aspects in neuroschistosomiasis

Abstract: The urbanization process of schistosomiasis has been described in the literature. The present report shows and discusses some epidemiological aspects of neuroschistosomiasis that emphasizes this trend. Method: The study was done between July, 2005 and June, 2006, and consisted of spinal cord schistosomiasis carriers at the moment of diagnosis. These patients were evaluated whatever the origin and period of the year that they developed the symptoms. Results: A total of 13 patients were evaluated. Ten cases (76.… Show more

“…Recent first-time exposure to contaminated waters among these patients could make them more susceptible towards developing a favorable immunological environment for promoting neurological damage. This differs from individuals who have been living in long-standing endemic zones for schistosomiasis, in which the contamination sometimes affects several generations of the same family 2,3,14 . This paradigm may explain the major spinal cord abnormalities observed in this sample and may represent a state of immunological hypersensitivity to the antigens and eggs of the worm.…”

“…The transmission of the disease depends on whether the infected person is the definitive host, on whether water collection systems have inadequate sanitation and on whether a freshwater mollusk is the intermediate host. 1,2 This disease is endemic in Brazil, however in the south only northern Paraná is considered an area of endemic transition. 1 It is suggested that people living in non-endemic areas with little exposure to S. mansoni are more susceptible to the development of myelitis from this parasite.…”

“…Devido a grandes variações de expressão clínica, a prevalência da MRE em área endémi-ca ainda não é conhecida (Santos, Campos, Diniz, Leal, & Rocha, 2001;Vidal, Gurgel, Ferreira, & Azevedo Filho, 2010). A cada ano, o número de casos aumenta e há falhas no mapeamento e notificação da doença, esses fatores mascaram a realidade que proporcionam consequências graves para os infetados.…”
