As people grow older, their functional losses become more and more evident. The elderly will progressively stop performing basic activities of life, thereby decreasing his/her functional capacity -measured in terms of his/her independence and ability to perform certain daily activities. Objective: To assess the functional capacity of elderly people attending the Family Health Program ("Programa Saúde da Família") in the neighborhood of Viveiros, Feira de Santana, Bahia. Method: This study is a cross-sectional research with a quantitative approach. The sample consisted of 34 male and female patients, aged 75. We conducted home visits to each of these elderly persons in order to apply three types of test: the Barthel Index, the Lawton Index and the Mini Mental State Examination. Results: The results show that 54.5% of these elders were found to be independent according to the Barthel Index, 51.5% were totally dependent according to the Lowton Index and 87.9% have some type of cognitive impairment according to the Mini Mental State Examination. Conclusion: Professionals working in the Family Health Program have to pay attention to the health status of the elderly, developing their care plan in accordance with the elderly's actual needs. We hope that the interest of other researchers about the proposed topic will be raised, in order to increase the availability of research (currently scarce) in this area of knowledge, so that the elderly will receive more adequate attention and counseling, by expanding the range of services and programs available to them.

Introduction:A number of studies have shown the impact of cognitive abilities on instrumental activities of daily living, in particular executive functions. Nevertheless, it is not clear to what extent these results can be generalized, given that most samples studied have not included people with a low educational level.Objectives:The current study aims to investigate the association between cognitive abilities and activities of daily living in older adults — with and without dementia — from a middle-income country.Sample:The sample consisted of 48 healthy older adults and 29 people with dementia, who were evaluated in an Outpatient Care Unit in a University Reference Center in Rio de Janeiro.Results:Regression analyses indicated that the best predictors for activities of daily living were performance in immediate verbal memory in the case of controls and in a categorical fluency task in the patient group. The educational level itself was not a significant predictor of functional ability in either sample, but showed moderate correlation with the predictors.Conclusions:These results suggest that educational level may be a mediating factor in the association of cognitive variables and activities of daily living, and indicate a potential dissociation in terms of predictors according to the diagnostic status, pointing to relevant treatment directions.

ResumoA capacidade funcional (independência e autonomia) é apontada pelos idosos como um aspecto importante relacionado à qualidade de vida, sendo a dependência associada a diversos fatores, inclusive a desnutrição. É importante avaliar o estado nutricional dos idosos, uma vez que este tem relação direta com a funcionalidade. O objetivo do estudo foi verificar a influência do estado nutricional na funcionalidade de idosos residentes em uma Instituição de Longa Permanência na cidade de Natal, RN. Foi realizado um estudo transversal, do tipo observacional analítico, que apresentou uma amostra por conveniência de vinte e quatro idosos com idade a partir de sessenta e cinco anos. A Medida de Independência Funcional -MIF foi aplicada para avaliar a capacidade funcional e a Mini-Avaliação Nutricional -MAN, em que se avaliou o estado nutricional dos participantes. Foram aferidos peso e altura para cálculo do Índice de Massa Corpórea (IMC). Dos participantes que não tinham condições de utilizar a balança, aferiu-se a circunferência da panturrilha -CP e de braço -CB, bem como a dobra cutânea subescapular e o comprimento da perna, para estimar o peso e a altura. A amostra foi constituída por 13 (54,2%) mulheres e 11 (45,8%) homens, sendo a média de idade 75,54 ± 8 anos. A capacidade funcional sofreu influência do IMC (p = 0,003), da MAN (p = 0,000), da CP (p = 0,001) e da CB (p = 0,033). O estado nutricional influenciou na funcionalidade dos idosos participantes da pesquisa.Palavras-chave: Estado Nutricional. Instituição de Longa Permanência para Idosos. A prevalência de idosos em instituição de longa permanência para idosos -ILPI chega a 11,0% nos países em desenvolvimento.
