Laryngeal electromyography in movement disorders: preliminary data

Abstract: -This study describes preliminary laryngeal electromyography (LEMG) data and botulinum toxin treatment in patients with dysphonia due to movement disorders. Twenty-five patients who had been clinically selected for botulinum toxin administration were examined, 19 with suspected laryngeal dystonia or spasmodic dysphonia (SD), 5 with vocal tremor, and 1 with Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (GTS). LEMG evaluations were performed before botulinum toxin administration using monopolar electrodes. Electromyography was… Show more

“…Similar values were obtained using computerized quantification of manually detected units26,38. Using the Multi-MUP method, reference values obtained from 40 healthy volunteers with a concentric electrode in the cricothyroid and thyroarytenoid muscles, had mean MUAP durations of 4.5 ms and mean amplitudes of 350 microvolts in the thyroarytenoid and 280 in the cricothyroid27.…”

“…LT involves both intrinsic and extrinsic laryngeal muscles and may spread to the surrounding musculature. In addition, LEMG is a useful tool for distinguishing the two diseases [17] . In the end, the distinction is difficult, particularly for patients with LT who compensate with significantly increased laryngeal muscle tension, and may result in a falsely elevated co-occurrence in our study.…”

“…Segundo Shouchard (1987), na postura ereta, os pés devem estar à frente dos tornozelos, conseqüentemente a linha da gravidade que cai no meio deles é encontrada à frente desta articulação, provocando um desequilíbrio anterior. Para corrigi-lo, obedecendo a lei do mínimo esforço, o joelho situa-se ligeiramente atrás da linha da gravidade, o ventre à frente, as costas atrás e a cabeça à frente.…”
