Show more

“…Also, an increase in the glycolytic function and a decrease in the oxidative capacity of peripheral muscles of chagasic patients have been reported, which were not observed for a control group of nonchagasic patients (269). Proportions of type II muscle fibers with a low activity of adenine nicotinamide dinucleotide diaphorase, a high proportion of fibers densely stained with alpha-glycerol phosphate, and low levels of citrate synthase in chagasic patients has been shown, and these findings were in different proportions for a healthy control group (140,141).…”

“…Recently, quantitative electroencephalogram (EEG) and event-related potentials have revealed alterations in all frequency bands -mainly the lower alpha and beta1 relative power, and higher theta and delta relative powerand have increased P300 latency, respectively [12]. A mild or asymptomatic somatic-sensitive peripheral neuropathy occurs in 8 to 11% of the patients [13][14][15][16][17][18][19]. In summary, the involvement of the central nervous system in the chronic phase of Chagas' disease, demonstrated by morphological or functional abnormalities as the substrate of a chronic neurological form, is still subject of discussion.…”
