Abstract: -Background -Helicobacter pylori infection is the gram negative bacillus with the close association with chronic antral gastritis. Objective -In this study, we evaluate the accuracy of urea breath test (UBT) with carbon isotope 13 in comparison with histopathology of gastric antrum for detection of H. pylori infection in children with dyspepsia. Methods -This cross-sectional study was performed at specialized laboratory of Shiraz Gastroenterohepatology Research Center and Nemazee Hospital, Iran, during a 12-mo… Show more

“…In Iran, Honar et al. investigating UBT performances for detection of H. pylori infection in comparison with histologic examination in 60 children, reported a sensitivity of 76.2% and a specificity of 69.2% . Many pitfalls were underlined to explain these poor results: patients' nonompliance, consumption of PPIs and/or antibiotics or host‐organism interaction varying among races, which can affect the urease activity as previously reported in Turkish and German children.…”

“…Many pitfalls were underlined to explain these poor results: patients' nonompliance, consumption of PPIs and/or antibiotics or host‐organism interaction varying among races, which can affect the urease activity as previously reported in Turkish and German children. Thus, HpSA using an ELISA is regarded as more convenient in children than the UBT . Furthermore, George et al .…”

“…C 13 -UBT is a fast and simple method that detects the presence of H. pylori in the gastric mucosa through urease activity of the pathogen (Di Rienzo et al, 2013). Moreover, the test shows high sensitivity and specificity, with sensitivity between 81-100%, and specificity between 80-98% (Honar et al, 2016), but the high initial investment of a isotope ratio mass spectrometer for obtaining results from C 13 -UBT is not feasible in most public health centers in developing countries. Furthermore, the use of anti secretory drugs or antibiotics can influence the results of the test (Di Rienzo et al, 2013).…”
