Reduced Hand Grip Strength in Overweight and Obese Chronic Hepatitis C Patients

Abstract: Although most patients with hepatitis C presented overweight, associated with high cardiovascular risk, they also have reduced functional capacity, indicative of protein-caloric commitment. Therefore, body mass index can not be considered the only method of assessment for nutritional diagnosis of patients with liver disease. Adopting methods such as hand grip strength can be important for a better understanding of nutritional status of these patients.

“…(29) This outcome was contrary to the one previous study done by Juliana Paula BRUCH, et all which concluded that those who were overweight or obese had weak HGS than those who were of a healthy weight. (30) Gender and age are the two main factors that influence handgrip strength, while gender accounting for the majority of the total variation. (11) Association of age and HGS of dominant and non-dominant hand had also been evaluated in this study.…”

“…After a verbal command, three repetitions are performed for each hand, with as much strength as possible with a 30-second-interval between each attempt for the same hand. For the analysis, it is considered the highest value obtained from the dominant hand, normalized by body weight [37]. 6-Minute Walk Test: The participants' aerobic functional capacity is measured indirectly by the submaximal six-minute walk test, which is performed on a 30-meter flat course.…”

“…Additionally, even patients with chronic liver disease who are not cirrhotic can have malnutrition. In this group of patients, malnutrition may be masked by obesity[ 5 ]. Due to the increasing prevalence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, overweight and obesity are becoming more common in cirrhotic patients.…”
