Anti-Ulcer Activity of Leguminosae Plants

Abstract: -Context -Ulcer is the most common gastrointestinal disturbance resulting from an inadequate gastric mucosal defense.Several drugs are available in the market to address the disease; however, these drugs are associated with unnecessary side effects. Objectives -Previous research have confirmed the efficacy of plant extracts for possible treatment of the disease. This research aims to evaluate the anti-ulcer properties of medicinal plants. Methods -Methanol extracts from the leaves of Intsia bijuga, Cynometra r… Show more

“…In the preliminary phytochemical screening, the 80% methanol leaf extract of OQ was positive for flavonoids, saponins, tannins, phenols, terpenoids, and alkaloids. These secondary metabolites are effective as antioxidant, antineoplastic, anti-ulcer, anti-inflammatory, and immune stimulating agents 20,24–28. Flavonoids are thought to increase mucosal prostaglandin content, decrease histamine secretion from mast cells by inhibition of histidine decarboxylase, inhibit Helicobacter pylori growth, act as free radical scavengers, and inhibit H+/K+-ATPase 25,27,29.…”

“…The anti-cancer activity of the methanolic extract has been demonstrated by Kharisov et al [19]. Paguigan et al [20] have shown the anti-ulcer activity of the leaves and analyzed the phytochemical contents of the leaf extract. Their study revealed the existence of flavonoids, tannins, alkaloids, cardiac glycoside, phenols, saponin and steroids in the leaf extract which were responsible for the antiulcer activity.…”

“…Pivatto et al (2005) confirmed the presence of piperidine alkaloids in ethanol extracts from flowers and fruits of S. spectabilis. Melo et al (2014) described the leishmanicidal activity of the flower crude extract and Paguigan et al (2014) reported the anti-ulcer activity in methanol extracts of leaves. Therefore, studies on alkaloid biosynthesis, and synthesizing and accumulating of these secondary compounds by in vitro induced callus are relevant to explore the possible development of biotechnological production systems for piperidine alkaloids.…”
