Show more

“…Absence or dietary deficiency of any of these compounds would favor hepatic triglyceride accumulation, due to defective formation of very low density lipoproteins (VLDL) and reduced β -oxidation of lipids. In addition, this deficiency leads to the committal of the methionine transsulfuration via the diminution of glutathione levels, thus reducing important part of the intracellular antioxidant defense [4, 5, 8, 9]. …”

“…NASH is associated with obesity, diabetes mellitus type II, hyperlipidemia, rapid weight loss in individuals submitted to jejunoileal bypass surgery to treat obesity, and exposure to drugs and industrial toxins (19,23) . The recognition of its progressive potential and its high prevalence across the globe are the main reasons why the scientific community is interested in performing studies relating to the disorder (51) .…”

“…Concerning treatment for NASH, so far no specific therapy has shown conclusive results and many authors think that patients with steatosis should be only observed and evaluated periodically. Others suggest that gradual weight loss and aerobic physical exercise could benefit obese patients, but further studies are necessary to confirm these hypotheses (22,41,51) .…”

“…Several animal models are currently available for the study of this condition and of hepatic steatosis, although none of them can fully reproduce the essential components of the human disease (5,13,18) . An efficient model for the induction of steatosis is the offer of choline-and methioninedeficient animals to small-sized animals (18,26) . However, in view of the eating habits of the western population based on a rapid absorption carbohydraterich diet, and especially the habits of the obese patient, the objective of the present study was to offer a high content of simple carbohydrates diet (4,15) , to eutrophic rats and to determine lipid deposition in the liver.…”
