Abstract

Patients with severe esophagitis had lower distal esophageal contraction amplitude than patients without esophagitis or with moderate esophagitis. There was no effect of aging on esophageal contractions.

Effect of aging on esophageal motility in patients with and without GERD

Similarly, Dantas and coworkers have shown a progressive reduction of esophageal wave amplitudes with higher degrees of esophagitis in a clinical study on GERD patients; however, the authors did not find significant differences between patients younger or older than 50 years [13]. All in all, conflicting results have been published in the literature on esophageal contractile amplitudes in younger and older patients.…”
