Suspected blood indicator in capsule endoscopy: a valuable tool for gastrointestinal bleeding diagnosis

Abstract: -Background -Small bowel bleeding is a leading indication for small bowel capsule endoscopy. The Suspected Blood Indicator (SBI) is a software feature directed to automatically detect bleeding lesions during small bowel capsule endoscopy. Objective -We aimed to assess SBI diagnostic accuracy for small bowel haemorrhage or potentially bleeding lesions during small bowel capsule endoscopy for small bowel bleeding. MethodsSingle-centre retrospective study including 281 consecutive small bowel capsule endoscopy pe… Show more

“…These results are in accordance with our results. False negative results of CE can occur due to the limited visual field of CE, poor bowel preparation, inadequate luminal distention, rapid passage around the proximal small bowel, and the lesions where bleeding has stopped spontaneously during CE [26,27]. It implies that negative findings in both, CT and CE, in patients with OGIB, do not guarantee lower rebleeding rates during long term follow-up.…”

“…Therefore, it remains unclear whether UCEIS could be accurately and reproducibly graded by CCE2. In contrast, CSUC has been validated for CCE2, and an automatic analysis system can be utilized to determine the location of bleeding in the colon and detect the bleeding using an SBI 25 . CSUC takes advantage of these characteristics of CCE2 and is expected to be objective and easy to use for clinical practice.…”

“…Small intestinal bleeds are the most frequent indication for the use of VCE. Although commercially available reading systems include blood content enhancement algorithms, referred to as “suspected blood indicators” (SBIs), the false positive rate is still high at over 70% [ 88 ]. Xiao et al and Hassan et al developed AI algorithms for the detection of bleeds with high sensitivity and specificity (99%) [ 23 , 89 ].…”
