The ophthalmic dysfunction amblyopia, commonly known as lazy eye, is characterized by decreased vision in one eye due to improper development in childhood. The aim of this study was to obtain and characterize natural rubber membranes and to assess their utility as an eye film capable of altering the passage of light. The latex membranes were produced using the Van Gogh method and the deposition technique and were analyzed by physical and chemical methods to determine the properties of latex in natura and of natural rubber membranes. The materials were characterized by X-ray diffractometry, scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetry, differential scanning calorimetry, analysis of water sorption and light crossing analysis. We report here a new approach to the treatment of patients with amblyopia using latex membranes.

A ambliopia é uma desordem visual com maior incidência em crianças, as dificuldades de tratamento se apresentam em decorrência do avanço da idade e a crença de que a plasticidade visual tende a diminuir. Objetiva-se investigar condições de tratamento para crianças amblíopes, através da classificação da ambliopia, identificação dos protocolos existentes para pacientes pediátricos e avaliação de tratamentos atuais desenvolvidos. Como metodologia, foi desenvolvida uma meta-análise, com revisão de estudos do período de 2018-2022, escritos em português, inglês e espanhol que trataram sobre ambliopia, plasticidade neural e protocolo de tratamento. Vislumbrando o tratamento para a ambliopia, as pesquisas ainda são incipientes, pois foi possível contemplar uma amostra mínima de literaturas, em sua maioria de estudos utilizando sempre objetivos semelhantes. Diante dos achados, a terapia de oclusão, terapias de estimulação cerebral, aprendizagem receptiva ou ainda intervenções de diferentes terapêuticas foram observados como tratamento promissores para ambliopia, pois de maneira individual ou correlacionadas possibilitam fortalecimento e recuperação binocular e estereopsia, levando a redução da ambliopia e melhoria da acuidade visual. A existência da plasticidade cerebral leva a reconhecer que protocolos de tratamento para ambliopias pediátricas podem continuar a ser desenvolvida, pois diante da adesão novos protocolos mistos podem e devem ser uma diretriz para os profissionais da saúde visual com abordagens que considere as particularidades do diagnóstico e graus de severidade, para que haja as devidas intervenções.

Abnormalities in visual processing caused by visual deprivation or abnormal binocular interaction may induce amblyopia, which is characterized by reduced visual acuity. Occlusion therapy, the conventional treatment, requires special attention as occlusion of the fellow normal eye may reduce its visual acuity and impair binocular vision. Besides recovering visual acuity, some researchers have recommended restoration of stereoacuity and motor fusion and reverse suppression in order to prevent diplopia. Recent studies have documented that the amblyopic visual cortex has a normal complement of cells but reduced spatial resolution and a disordered topographical map. Changes occurring in the late sensitive period selectively impact the parvocellular pathway. Distinct morphophysiologic and psychophysical deficits may demand individualization of therapy, which might provide greater and longer-lasting residual plasticity in some children.
