Color Doppler imaging of the ophthalmic artery in patients with chronic heart failure

Abstract: Purpose: To evaluate the ophthalmic artery hemodynamics in patients with chronic heart failure. Methods: Doppler parameters of ophthalmic artery of 18 patients with chronic heart failure in different stages of the disease were compared with 21 healthy volunteers (control group). These parameters were also correlated with echocardiographic assessments and clinical cardiologic status. Results: Mean diastolic velocity was 5.14 ± 2.4 cm/s in the chronic heart failure group and 7.44 ± 3.5 cm/s in the control group … Show more

“…However, studies indicate that cerebral blood flow may be reduced in these patients 7,8. A recent study with color Doppler imaging reported reduced blood flow velocities and an increased resistance index in the ophthalmic artery of CHF patients 9. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the association between CHF and ONH alterations.…”

“…In a previous article we described findings of color Doppler imaging of ophthalmic artery in chronic heart failure (CHF) patients (1) . CHF patients presented lower blood flow velocities and higher resistance index in ophthalmic artery when compared to control group.…”

“…In this novel approach the authors found that the maintenance of epithelium does not interfere in the transmission of ultraviolet light to the corneal stroma, but interferes with the absorption of riboflavin for the same. This study opens up space for future research in the transepithelial use of drugs that promote crosslinking and are able to cross the epithelial barrier. Two studies used ocular ultrasound associated to Doppler technology to assess blood flow in the ophthalmic artery (9) as well as in central retinal artery and short posterior ciliary arteries (10) . Almeida-Freitas et al (9) evaluated the flow of the ophthalmic artery in 18 patients with chronic heart failure and 21 controls, demonstrating differences between groups in diastolic velocity and arterial resistance index.…”
