“…In our previous study with a similar criteria, we found that there were only 164 articles published in international periodicals as collected in the PubMed database over twenty years (1980)(1981)(1982)(1983)(1984)(1985)(1986)(1987)(1988)(1989)(1990)(1991)(1992)(1993)(1994)(1995)(1996)(1997)(1998)(1999) [16]. In the report of Ragghianti et al, some characteristics of publication in ophthalmology and visual science journals in South American countries seem similar to our current situation [7]. Compared to developed countries, the contribution to OOVS research from China and other developing countries has been quite low up to now [8].…”

“…The productivity in research has been mainly based on straight publication counts, which is one of the widely used methods to measure scientific achievement [4]. Bibliometric analysis has been performed on ophthalmology and/or visual cortex and optometry to disclose the research productivity in several countries or regions, e.g., New Zealand [5], Australia [6], South America [7], Europe and the USA [8]. However, there is little data on actual or expected productivity patterns of ocular healthcare activities, especially the contributions to international ophthalmology, from mainland China.…”

“…A decision is subsequently made for acceptance or refusal onto the programme. Special attention is focused on avoiding restraints because of English language, a limitation frequently found in physicians from non‐English speaking countries that may hinder their participation in the globalized world 4 …”
