“…In a previous study of children with congenital cataract who underwent lensectomy, strabismus was present in 54.8% of the patients and esotropia accounted for 64.7% of the cases (27) . A study of ocular alignment after surgery conducted in 41 children with dense cataracts, among which 27 (66%) developed strabismus, demonstrated that congenital cataract was associated with a greater risk for the occurrence of strabismus than developmental cataract.…”

“…Early identification of cataract and prompt referral for specialized treatment are needed for good visual results. Despite existence of the simple and non-invasive red reflex test for cataract detection (11,(15)(16)(17)(18) , screening is not a common practice in the majority of countries and most of the time delay detection is made by parents when they notice leukocoria, nystagmus or/and strabismus (9,10,19,20) . In Brazil, surgery for cataract in children is performed in both private and public tertiary centers, although ophthalmic services differ in terms of availability and quality in these two sectors.…”

“…Inherited cataracts correspond to 8 to 25% of congenital cataracts (11) , particularly for bilateral cataract, Rahi and Dezateux (12) found that 27% of children with bilateral isolated congenital cataract had a genetic basis compared with 2% of unilateral cases. In Brazil, some authors (13) reported hereditary etiology in 22%, intrauterine infections (rubella, toxoplasmosis, cytomegalovirus, herpes simplex, varicella, and syphilis) in 38%, and idiopathic in 40% of the bilateral cases. Although X-linked and autosomal recessive transmission has been observed, the most frequent mode of inheritance is autosomal dominant with a high degree of penetrance (14) .…”
