Abstract

INTRODUÇÃOA catarata é considerada a principal causa de cegueira, sendo responsá-vel por cerca da metade do número de cegos no mundo. A cegueira por catarata incapacita o indivíduo, aumenta sua dependência, reduz sua condição social e resulta em aposentadoria profissional precoce (1)(2)(3)(4)(5) . A recuperação da visão pela cirurgia de catarata produz benefícios econômicos e sociais para o indivíduo, sua família e comunidade (6)(7)(8)(9)(10)(11)(12)(13) . Foram realizadas, no Brasil, entre 1996 e 1998 e financiadas pelo Sistema Único de Saúde (SUS), em média, 132 mil cirurgias de catarata por ano, proporção essa, insuficiente até mesmo para compensar os novos casos surgidos nesse período (6,(14)(15)(16)(17) .
