New perspectives in the diagnosis of pediatric male hypogonadism: the importance of AMH as a Sertoli cell marker

Abstract: SUMMARYSertoli cells are the most active cell population in the testis during infancy and childhood. In these periods of life, hypogonadism can only be evidenced without stimulation tests, if Sertoli cell function is assessed. AMH is a useful marker of prepubertal Sertoli cell activity and number. Serum AMH is high from fetal life until mid-puberty. Testicular AMH production increases in response to FSH and is potently inhibited by androgens. Serum AMH is undetectable in anorchidic patients. In primary or cent… Show more

“…On the contrary, AMH serum levels showed a very high significant decrease in 46,XY DSD compared with the healthy boys (P<.001). The same results were declared by Grinspon and Rey [14]. who stated that the serum levels of AMH in boys with anorchia or bilateral undescended testes were unremarkable.…”

“…There are various reports that have explored which value can be an indicator in case the AMH values used to determine functional testicular tissue in DSDs accompanied by GD is estimated to be low . In our study, the mean AMH value in patients diagnosed with GD was 11.51 ± 9.56.…”

“…This suggests that the testicular phenotype is not due to primary failure of testicular IGSF14954 but to overstimulation of Sertoli cells by pituitary FSH (main known stimulus for Inhibin/AMH secretion and Sertoli cell proliferation). Other researchers also found IGSF1 protein and mRNA in mouse germinal epithelium, (less) in Leydig cells and also in Sertoli cells, but only at stages VI–XIII of the maturating tubular epithelium22.…”
