Androgens and the male reproductive tract: an overview of classical roles and current perspectives

Abstract: Androgens are steroid hormones that play key roles in the development and maintenance of male phenotype and reproductive function. These hormones also affect the function of several non-reproductive organs, such as bone and skeletal muscle. Endogenous androgens exert most of their effects by genomic mechanisms, which involve hormone binding to the androgen receptor (AR), a ligand-activated transcription factor, resulting in the modulation of gene expression. AR-induced non-genomic mechanisms have also been rep… Show more

“…This complex process is precisely regulated by androgens, although, estrogens have also been shown to be involved [23,24]. Androgens are steroid hormones primarily involved in the establishment of sexual maturation at puberty, and in maintenance of the male reproductive function, spermatogenesis and sexual behavior during adult life [25]. Many studies have proved that not only androgens have important functions in the adult male reproductive organ, but also estrogen and its receptors are essential for normal fertility in the male.…”

“…Androgens are steroid hormones primarily involved in the establishment of sexual maturation at puberty, and in maintenance of the male reproductive function, spermatogenesis and sexual behavior during adult life [17]. It is well established that androgen receptors (AR) are expressed widely throughout the developing male reproductive system [18].…”

“…AR-mRNA and protein are also present in the human with a falling concentration from the caput to the cauda [8]. It is also known that the androgens can autoregulate the expression of AR-mRNA promoting AR protein stabilization too [26].…”
