Objective: To identify the characteristics of patients with acute renal failure (ARF), polytrauma victims hospitalized in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Methods: A retrospective analysis was performed on 357 records of patients with ARF in the period of 2002 to 2003. These patients presented a creatinine index of 1.8 to 4 mg/dl. Of these patients, 10.6% in the ICU were polytrauma victims. Results: Of the 38 (10.6%) patients with ARF and polytrauma victims, 78.9% of were males; 47.3% were aged between 16 and 45 years; 84.3% presented oliguria; 92.1% received no treatment for ARF during hospitalization; 50% remained from one to five days in the ICU; 47.3% had not presented any underlying disease and mortality occurred in 50%. Conclusion: Daily control of the renal function in polytrauma victims is important to prevent ARF complications and consequent mortality. Resultados: Dos 38 (10,6%) pacientes portadores de IRA e vítimas de politrauma, 78,9% eram do sexo masculino; 47,3% tinham idade entre 16 e 45 anos; 84,3% apresentaram oligúria; 92,1% não receberam tratamento para IRA durante a internação; 50% permaneceram de um a cinco dias internados na UTI; 47,3% não apresentaram nenhuma doença de base e a mortalidade ocorreu em 50% desta amostra. Conclusão: Concluiu-se que a monitorização diária da função renal das vítimas de politrauma é um cuidado importante para evitar as complicações da IRA e a respectiva mortalidade. Métodos: Se llevó a cabo un análisis retrospectivo de 357 historias clínicas de portadores de IRA, en el período de 2002 a 2003, con creatinina sérica de 1,8 a 4 mg/dl. De estos pacientes internados en la UCI, el 10,6% eram víctimas de politrauma. Resultados: De los 38 (10,6%) pacientes portadores de IRA y víctimas de politrauma, el 78,9% eran del sexo masculino; el 47,3% tenían edades entre 16 y 45 años; el 84,3% presentaron oliguria; el 92,1% no recibieron tratamiento para IRA durante el internamiento; el 50% permanecieron de uno a cinco días internados en la UCI; el 47,3% no presentaron ninguna enfermedad de base y la mortalidad ocurrió en el 50% de esta muestra. Conclusión: el monitoreo diario de la función renal de las víctimas de politrauma es un cuidado importante para evitar las complicaciones de la IRA y la respectiva mortalidad.

In this work, it is shown the development and validation of innovative analytical methodology based on solid-phase extraction (SPE) with molecularly imprinted polymers (MIP) as a sorbent associated to UV-Vis spectroscopy to isolate and quantify, respectively, rosuvastatin (RSV) in water samples. For this purpose, porogenic solvent in MIP synthesis and SPE extraction parameters for MIP and non-imprinted polymers (NIP) were evaluated univariately for comparison purposes. The sorptive capacity and characterization studies by infrared spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy showed difference between MIP and NIP. The selectivity study of the MIP-RSVagainst other statins (simvastatin and atorvastatin) showed that the synthesized MIP can also be applied as a solid phase for isolation and quantitative pre-concentration of RSVand atorvastatin. The conjugation of SPE and UV-Vis spectroscopy in the determination of RSV in aqueous matrices led to large factor of pre-concentration (125 times), limit of detection (LOD) of 3 μg L−1, limit of quantification (LOQ) of 10 μg L−1, precision of 2.87% (n = 10), and accuracy of 83.1% (n = 4).

Introduction: Treatment of cardiovascular risk factors seems to be necessary and involves a number of changes in drug treatment and lifestyle. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of Matricaria chamomilla L. hydroalcoholic extract on antioxidant activity, atherosclerotic plaques, lipid profile and inflammatory indicators in rats. Methods: Thirty male Wistar rats were divided into five experimental groups consisting of group 1 (Sham; normal dietary), group 2 (control; high cholesterol diet (2%)), group 3 (high cholesterol diet plus 55 mg/kg of chamomile hydroalcoholic extract), group 4 (high cholesterol diet plus 110 mg/kg of chamomile hydroalcoholic extract), and group 5 (high cholesterol diet plus 10 mg/kg of lovastatin). At the beginning and end of the study, blood samples of all the animals were taken for determination of antioxidant activity and the level of biochemical parameters. The hearts and aorta were also isolated for ontological tests. Results: No symptom of plaque formation was observed in experimental groups 3, 4 and 5 that received the high cholesterol diet. High cholesterol diet (2%) resulted in a significant increase in serum cholesterol level, TG and LDL-c levels in groups 2 and 3 as compared to group 1 (P<0.001). No significant difference was observed in serum cholesterol, TG and LDL-c levels in experimental groups 4 and 5, compared to experimental group 1. In group 4, serum HDL-c concentration did not show significant changes as compared to group 1. In groups 4 and 5, no significant change was observed in inflammatory factors as compared to group 1. The levels of superoxide dismutase in red blood cells and malondialdehyde in plasma of groups 3 and 5 showed no significant change when compared with group 1. Conclusion: Chamomile led to the management and correction of changes in risk factors of cardiovascular diseases.
