Contiguous urban rivers should not be necessarily submitted to the same management plan: the case of Tietê and Pinheiros Rivers (São Paulo-Brazil)

Abstract: The management of urban water resources plays an important role for developing countries. The Tietê and Pinheiros Rivers (São Paulo, Brazil) are affected by domestic and industrial effluents and by the diffuse pollution. This research aimed to quantify 134 variables in the water of Tietê and Pinheiros Rivers (approximately 7,200 and 6,600 analyses, respectively) from August 2007 to December 2008. The idea was to verify if the fact that both rivers are located in the same basin is enough to consider the… Show more

“…Billings reservoir was chosen for this analysis because the water of the Pinheiros River may somehow mix with the Billings reservoir at a certain circumstance. For instance, the pumping of the Pinheiros River to the Billings reservoir is allowed by Brazilian regulations in cases of flood control, a need for emergency power generation, and other exceptional situations 13 . Linear discriminant analysis (LDA) of effect size (LEfSe) was used to identify biologically and statistically significant changes in the relative OTU relative abundance of microbial taxa 29 .…”

“…Pinheiros River, a tributary of Tietê River, is a large urban breeding ground of mosquitoes. Insecticides are applied in the river margins to eliminate mosquitoes and other vectors, and traces of these insecticides were found on the waters of Pinheiros River (Cunha et al 2011).…”
