Evaluation of the altimetry from SRTM-3 and planimetry from high-resolution PALSAR FBD data for semi-detailed topographic mapping in the Amazon Region

Abstract: The Brazilian Amazon has a deficit of 35% of coverage regarding topographic mapping at semi-detailed (1:100,000) scale. This paper presents an alternative to overcome this scenario using a combination of planialtimetric information from two orbital SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) missions. The altimetry was acquired from Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM), while the planimetry was provided from Fine Beam Dual (FBD) images of the Phased Array L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (PALSAR) sensor. The research was… Show more

“…Observa-se que em certos pontos a mancha se delineia excluindo as áreas com cotas mais elevadas. Rodrigues et al (2011) argumentam sobre a qualidade planialtimétrica dos dados SRTM, havendo a presença de deslocamento da componente vertical, que pode ser parcialmente atenuado durante o processamento dos modelos, porém, destacam o efeito da vegetação na altimetria gerada.…”

“…Thus, the orthometric altitudes referenced to the EGM96 geoid model was converted to the orthometric altitudes referenced to the Imbituba vertical datum and SIRGAS 2000 horizontal datum. The following steps were performed, based on the methodologies employed by [ 2 , 48 , 49 ].…”

“…Three types of Digital Elevation Models (DEM) maps have been used to deeply investigate both the terrain morphology and river dynamics [113]–[116]: an IGM-DEM map [117], a Shuttle Radar Topographic Mission (SRTM) map [79], and a GDEM derived by the Aster satellite [78].…”
