Tunasniyoj, a dinosaur tracksite from the Jurassic-Cretaceous boundary of Bolivia

Abstract: Here we report a superbly preserved and profusely represented five-ichnotaxa dinosaur track assemblage near Icla village, 100 km southeast of Sucre, Bolivia. As preserved in reddish Jurassic-Cretaceous boundary aeolian sandstones, this rich and uncommon assemblage is, additionally, the oldest dinosaur tracksite for Bolivia. Four trackmakers were identified in the area: three quadrupedal and one bipedal, all of them with tracks of around 35 cm in lenght. One of the quadrupedals is represented by no less than fi… Show more

“…Apestegu ıa and Gallina (2011) regarded the pedal track DP45-5A(lp1) as tetradactyl, contrasting with our tridactyl interpretation. Their interpretation is based on a comparison with pedal tracks assigned to La Puerta Formation ichnotaxon A of Bolivia (Apestegu ıa and Gallina, 2011:fig.…”

“…3D ) is well preserved, and the diagnosis is accurate. Apulosauripus was first related to hadrosaurs [ 62 ], but subsequent studies have suggested that a thyreophoran is the possible trackmaker [ 63 – 65 ]. Accordingly, we consider it a non-ornithopod ichnotaxon.…”

“…This tracksite yielded thousands of footprints, many of which belong to small-to-medium-sized hadrosauroids with a quadrupedal gait ( Apulosauripus ; Nicosia et al 2000b ). It is worth noting, however, that recently the Apulosauripus tracks had been referred to an indeterminate thyreophoran (e.g., Dalla Vecchia 2009b ; Petti et al 2010 ; Apesteguía and Gallina 2011 ). Other, less common tracks were identified as belonging to small sauropods and ankylosaurs, whereas theropods appear to be absent or very poorly represented ( Nicosia et al 2000a ; Del Sasso 2003 ).…”
