Balanced cytokine-producing pattern in mice immunized with an avirulent Trypanosoma cruzi

Abstract: We have previously demonstrated that inoculation of BALB/c mice with trypomastigotes of CL-14, an avirulent Trypanosoma cruzi clone, prevents the development of parasitemia and mortality after challenge with virulent CL strain. In this report, we investigated the cytokine and antibody profiles induced by inoculation with CL-14 clone. Groups of mice were inoculated with trypomastigotes of CL-14 clone and challenged with infective CL strain. Challenged CL-14-inoculated mice had lower levels of IFN-γ and higher p… Show more

“…Although the patients with the indeterminate clinical form also develop a type 1 specific response against the parasite, it is controlled by a regulatory response, as previously reported by our group (Gomes et al 2003(Gomes et al , 2005 and others (Vitelli-Avelar et al 2005, 2008Dutra et al 1997;Menezes et al 2004;Souza et al 2007;Soares et al 2003).…”

“…Such data open new perspectives for a novel vaccine approach based on a CD40L-transfected pathogen. Future work will focus on characterization of the immunological mechanisms involved in such protection and on comparing these mechanisms to those described with other known attenuated parasites (44,45).…”

“…cruzi infection. Importantly, after inoculation in adult animals, CL-14 prevents the development of parasitemia and mortality following challenge with the virulent CL strain [ 16 , 18 , 19 ]. Since vaccination with live CL-14 induces a potent and long-lasting parasite-specific humoral and T-cell mediated immunity against challenge with highly virulent strains of T .…”
