Occurrences of evaporites in the Irati subgroup (Late Permian, Paraná Basin)

Abstract: The Passa Dois Group is divided into formations and members, representing variations of lithofacies separated by unconformities or correlative conformities. The contact between the Passa Dois and Tubarão Groups is represented by a paraconformity, and the contact between the Passa Dois and São Bento Groups corresponds to a regional unconformity or correlative conformity.Intracratonic basins differ physiographically from passive margin basins, for which the concepts of Sequence Stratigraphy were originally develo… Show more

“…Other microbialites in the Assistência Member include domed stromatolites and microbial laminated facies described near the study area (Calça & Fairchild 2012), in some cases recording organic-walled microfossils such as coccoidal cyanobacteria and palynomorphs. Other limestone dome structures associated with dolostones of the Irati Formation have been interpreted as small and localized salt domes (Hachiro 2000).…”

“…The Early Permian Irati Formation is in the Paraná Basin, which underlies all or part of the Brazilian states of Mato Grosso do Sul, Mato Grosso, Goiás, São Paulo, Paraná, Santa Catarina, and Rio Grande do Sul. The Irati Formation is the basal unit of the Passa Dois Group and is characterized by bituminous shales derived from sediments deposited in an extensive, at least partially anoxic, epicontinental sea that was part of a broad marine transgression during parts of the Carboniferous and Permian (Zalán et al, 1990;Hachiro, 2000).…”
