Interactions between cationic liposomes and drugs or biomolecules

Abstract: Multiple uses for synthetic cationic liposomes composed of dioctadecyldimethylammonium bromide (DODAB) bilayer vesicles are presented. Drugs or biomolecules can be solubilized or incorporated in the cationic bilayers. The cationic liposomes themselves can act as antimicrobial agents causing death of bacteria and fungi at concentrations that barely affect mammalian cells in culture. Silica particles or polystyrene microspheres can be functionalized by coverage with DODAB bilayers or phospholipid monolayers. Neg… Show more

“…Furthermore, one should recall the bioactivity previously reported for DODAB dispersions (3,5,6). They are microbicides and exhibit a remarkable differential cytotoxicity when tested against mammalian cells in culture (43), a requirement for drugs with potential use in therapy (3,6,43). Therefore, drug self-assembly at DODAB bilayer fragments appears a convenient combination for further developments.…”

“…Bilayer [184,184,186], multibilayer [186,205], monolayer-covered [40,187], monolayer plus bilayer(s) covered particles [187 -189], a layer of adhered vesicles [72][73][74]78] could occur on the particle depending on nature of vesicles and particles involved (recall Fig. (2)).…”

“…[174][175][176][177][178][256][257][258][259] In addition, both DODAB and DHP BF were employed to stabilize hydrophobic drug particles in water so that formulations at high drug to lipid molar ratios could also be obtained. 196,203 In these formulations, the electrostatic attraction between the charged drug particle and the oppositely charged BF essentially drives the coverage with a lipid layer.…”
