Aeromonas species isolated from PINTADO fish (Pseudoplatystoma sp): virulence factors and drug susceptibility

Abstract: Aeromonas has been described as an emergent foodborne pathogen of increasing importance. In this study, we report that 48% of 50 Pintado fish samples collected at the retail market of São Paulo city were positive for Aeromonas sp, as detected by the direct plating method. When the presence/absence method was used, the positivity was 42%. A. caviae was the most frequent species, followed by A. hydrophila and A. sobria. Production of cytotoxic enterotoxin, observed in suckling mouse assay, was detected in 67% of… Show more

“…However, considering analysis from both methods, total positive results increase to 20 (67%) collections. These results are similar to those found by RALL et al 23 who isolated 24 (48%) samples of Aeromonas from commercial fish in São Paulo, Brazil with direct plating (DP) method and 21 (42%) with P/A method.…”

“…showed 88%, 82% and 40% susceptibility, respectively. Similar susceptibility results were found by RALL et al 23 for A. sobria (100%) and A. caviae (93%), but different results were found for Aeromonas sp. (93%).…”

“…The results of A. hydrophila and A. cavie research corroborate the findings by RALL et al (1998), who found Aeromonas contamination in 48% of the samples of pintado (Pseudoplatystoma sp.) collected in supermarkets of the city of São Paulo, A. cavie being the most frequent (60%), followed by A. hydrophila (50%) and A. sobria (12%), emphasizing the relevance of these species in fish.…”
