Histomorphometric comparison of the corpus cavernosum of rats submitted to euthanasia with ketamine and xylazine or isoflurane

Abstract: Purpose: To compare the penile histoarchitecture of rats euthanized with isoflurane or with ketamine and xylazine. Methods: Fourteen male rats were divided into two groups: ISO, with animals euthanized with isoflurane; and K+X, with animals euthanized with ketamine (150 mg/kg) associated with xylazine (15 mg/kg). Immediately after the death, the penises were dissected, fixed in a 4% buffered formalin solution, and processed for histomorphometric analysis. The surface densities (Sv) of the corpus cavernosum str… Show more

“…Furthermore, the surface density of connective tissue, smooth muscle fibers, and elastic system fibers are commonly assessed for this purpose ( 19 ). This method has been successfully used to determine the proportions of CC components in various situations ( 8 , 18 , 20 , 28 , 30 ). To the best of our knowledge, this study is the first of its kind to show the cavernosal modifications after tamsulosin, either alone or in combined administration with dutasteride.…”

“…At the end of the protocol, animals were subjected to a 12-h overnight fast prior to dissection. All the animals were euthanised using a mixture of ketamine and xylazine (10:1) at a dose of (0.2 ml/100 g) [ 20 ]and the kidneys were removed immediately, flushed with 0.9% NaCl and then stored in 10% formalin solution for analysis.…”
