Analyses of OJIP transients in leaves of two epiphytic orchids under drought stress

Abstract: The tolerance to low water availability is a decisive factor for growth and survival of orchids in their natural environment. The objective of this study was to characterize the photochemical traits of two epiphytic orchids (Cattleya warneri and Miltonia spectabilis) under water deficit (WD). Chlorophyll a fluorescence signals were recorded from young and fully expanded leaves of 5 plants/species after dark-adaption for 60 minutes, between 6-9 a.m. after 0, 30, 60, and 90 days of WD, using a Handy-PEA fluorome… Show more

“…In addition, there was a significant discrepancy in the Mo, V J , and Sm values (P < 0.01) seen among M. aeruginosa cells cultivated at varying doses of Z. bungeanum residue extracts (Fig. 7 C–E), and the increase in Mo, V J, and Sm values indicated the limited electron flux beyond Q A , resulting in a blockade of electron transport of PSII 41 .
Figure 7 Z. bungeanum residue extracts inhibited the electron transport of PSII.

“…6 a–c). The increase in Vk and Vj are indication of limited electron flux resulting from the accumulation of PSII acceptors (QA and QB, the primary and secondary electron acceptors of PSII, respectively) and the plastoquinone (PQ) pool, leading to a blockade of electron transport (Zampirollo et al 2021 ). Notably, R light exposure resulted in a significant increase in the Vk and Vj or ΔVk and ΔVj, confirming the negative effect of R light on photosynthetic units on the 7th and 21st day (Fig.…”

“…The ability of shade-loving plants to respond to changes in their light environment, e.g., dynamic events of opening and closing of forest clearings, has a significant repercussion on their performance, being critical and decisive in the competition for natural resources (Craine and Dybzinski, 2013). Therefore, higher photosynthetic efficiency is observed in orchids that grow under low luminosity (Zampirollo et al, 2021). On the other hand, high-light irradiation reduces photosynthetic efficiency due to photoinhibition of them (Wu et al, 2020).…”
