Calcium nitrate on growth and ornamental traits at salt-stressed condition in ornamental kale (Brassica oleracea L. var. Acephala)

Abstract: Ornamental plants are used to improve the aestheticquality of urban and rural landscapes, recreational areas, interiorscapes and commercial sites. Any negative effects of salts on ornamental plant growth have to be taken into consideration mainly for their negative influences on aesthetic value of ornamental plants. The research was conducted to determine the effects of different concentrations of calcium nitrate on some stress parameters (i.e. leaf relative water content, chlorophyll, stomatal conductance, io… Show more

“…The decrease in leaf development and, consequently, in kale yield in response to salt stress has also been observed in the literature (Karagöz & Dursun, 2021;Šamec et al, 2021;Zeiner et al, 2022), as well as by other authors working with other Brassicaceae, such as pak choi (Brassica campestris var Chinensis L.) (Ding et al, 2018), broccoli (Brassica oleracea L. var. Italica) (Rios et al, 2020), and cauliflower (Brassica oleracea var.…”

“…Some studies have shown that adequate calcium nutrition mitigates effects of salt stress on plant physiology (Tanveer et al, 2020;Ahmed et al, 2021;Karagöz & Dursun, 2021). Ca 2+ is secondary messenger, involved in the regulation of physiological processes of development and in responses to stress.…”

“…The ornamental flower industry has developed rapidly. However, with the increase of primary and secondary soil salinization since the beginning of the 21st century, soil salinization has become one of the major problems of flowers planted for urban greening (Li et Karagöz and Dursun 2021), leads to nutrient imbalance in plants, influences photosynthesis and produces reactive oxygen species (ROS), then reduces the biomass of the plant and the number and quality of its flowers, and affects the flowering period of plants (García-Caparrós and Lao 2018). Therefore, it is crucial to explore ways of improving salt tolerance in ornamental plants in order to promote the development of the flower industry.…”
