Frequency analysis of minimum flows

Abstract: The study of minimum flows is increasingly important due to the relationship with ecosystem sustainability, the economy and its role as a sentinel of climate change. The aim of this paper is to contribute to the theoretical treatment of minimum extremes and, specifically, minimum flows. The method has two approaches: i) conventional; ii) asymptotic. In conventional analysis, the Weibull (W2) and Lognormal distributions of two parameters (LN2) were adjusted to the series of annual minimum flows and minimum aver… Show more

“…Mean, median, and 95% confidence intervals (CI) (lower and upper limits) were calculated for Q obs and Q ref for the three methodologies, and RE according to Equations (3)- (6). Standard deviations and coefficients of variation were also calculated.…”

“…The assessment of water availability may be performed through minimum, mean, and maximum flows, combined with the variation in rainfall [5]. The minimum flow (ecological flow) in watercourses indicates the natural minimal water availability for satisfying the uses in a hydrographic basin and is a suitable variable for water management, especially for conflict management in water scarcity scenarios [6].…”

“…However, the areas of interest do not always have enough information, for several reasons, thus, flow estimation methods are needed (Kim et al, 2016).According to Araújo & Rocha (2010),water resources assessment, in respect to water availability, can be performed through minimum, average and maximum flows, together with the variation of precipitation. Smakthin (2001) relates that minimum flows are responsible for indicating natural water availability in a watershed and are essential variables for water use management, for example, and may also influence the management of conflicts in water scarcity scenarios (Granemann et al, 2018).…”

“…As vazões mínimas caracterizam a disponibilidade hídrica natural da bacia hidrográfica (Smakhtin, 2001), e são variáveis imprescindíveis para a concessão de uso da água e diluição de efluentes, fatores que influenciam o manejo de conflitos através do uso em situações de escassez (Granemann et al, 2018)…”
