Análise da pressão da língua em indivíduos adultos jovens brasileiros

Abstract: Purpose: To present the measures for tongue pressure in Brazilian young adults, considering specific tasks, and to verify the differences regarding gender and according to the tasks. Methods: Fifty-one volunteers aged 18 to 28 years, of both genders with normal occlusion and without speech disorders were evaluated. We used the Iowa Oral Performance Instrument in the evaluation of tongue pressure (kilopascal) during specific tests of elevation, protrusion, swallowing, and lateralization, in addition to the endu… Show more

“…The effect of age on tongue SP was nonsignificant. SP remains stable throughout the majority of life, supporting previous findings [4,25,26]. However, in contrast, one Korean study demonstrated that the tongue pressure used during swallowing was statistically significantly higher for older adults than for younger adults [27].…”

“…Prandini et al [26] recruited 51 Brazilian volunteers aged 18-28 years to measure tongue pressure during specific tasks, e.g., tongue elevation, endurance, and swallowing. The results showed that sex had no influence on these tasks.…”

“…The literature suggests that healthy adults should have maximum isometric tongue pressures ≥ 40 kPa, and SSPs between 20 and 30 kPa [13]. The percentages of maximum isometric tongue pressure generated during saliva swallowing and water swallowing were 40-60% [9,33]. However, Peladeau-Pigeon et al analyzed the swallowing tasks of 84 healthy participants and found that the peak amplitudes of saliva swallowing, on average, ranged from 70% to 81% of the values obtained for the MIP ant [34].…”

“…25 Recent studies attempted to establish norms for populations from different regions and countries with the effort to provide accurate normative control data for assessments. 2,4,21,30,31 Results of these studies found that both tongue strength and endurance measurements failed to demonstrate consistency among the population studied from different countries, 32 which emphasized the importance of avoiding directly referencing normative data from other populations during the assessment without careful consideration.…”
