Seed and fruit size affect soaking and physiological seed quality in Campomanesia adamantium?

Abstract: The size of fruits and seeds can affect the seed germination process and aspects related to the vigor of the seedlings formed. Our aim was to characterize fruit and seed biometrics, evaluate the effect of seed size on soaking and the effect of seed size and temperature on the germination and vigor of Campomanesia adamantium . The fruit was evaluated to determine longitudinal diameter, transverse diameter, fresh mass and empty, full and total seed quantities. The seeds were sorted into small, medium and large c… Show more

“…Provenance of seeds influenced germination at extreme temperatures, in which at 15 o C for large seeds and at 40 o C for small seeds from Jutaí obtained the higher percentages (Table 2). Seed vigor and seedling development and establishment are positively correlated to larger seeds (Domic et al, 2020), in many cases germination at optimum temperature range is not affected by seeds size (Bispo et al, 2017;Leão-Araújo et al, 2020). On the other hand, since stress may have transgenerational effects on seeds and seedlings, resulting in stress-induced improvement of seed endurance due to inter-generational stress memory, formed by stressinduced changes in the epigenome of the seedling (Hatzig et al, 2018).…”

“…Alguns trabalhos de pesquisas vêm relacionando o peso das sementes com o potencial germinativo e vigor das sementes. Sabe-se que sementes mais pesadas possuem maior quantidade de fotoassimilados durante sua formação, maior quantidade de tecidos de reserva, consequentemente maior vigor e germinação (Leão-Araújo, et al, 2020;Padilha, Donatto & Sobral, 2021).…”

“…The first phase comprises rapid seed imbibition, the second (stationary) phase, intense hydration and breathing intensity reductions, and the third, stabilization. The end of an imbibition curve begins with the disruption of the seed coat by the embryo’s radicle, when a new and slight water absorption occurs due to the metabolic requirements of embryo cell divisions and elongations, characterizing the third phase of the germination process [ 17 , 18 , 19 ].…”
