Virtual meetings and social isolation in COVID-19 times: transposable barriers

Abstract: Social isolation has been shown to severely impact the health of isolated individuals and has been associated with stress, anxiety and mood disorders. Technological correspondence has been pointed out as one of the greatest villains of generation Z times, in which loss of inperson communication between individuals has become a fairly common phenomenon. Specialists attribute many communication and affective impairments to the increasing use of social media and virtual interactions. 1,2 Currently, however, in ti… Show more

“…Our research design pointed local officials to videos made by youth in their own jurisdictions, and these local connections may also help explain the youth's influence, as locally framed messaging seems to be effective in engaging adults on even controversial issues such as climate change (Evans et al, 2014). Furthermore, considering that approximately half of the videos were viewed after local lockdowns occurred due to COVID-19, the connections created by virtual videos may have been amplified by the scarce nature of community connections at the time (Antonello et al, 2020). Our finding that officials were less changed by youth presentations than their community adult counterparts is perhaps not surprising-given officials must operate within the structural systems of government and represent the will of their constituents (Staerklé, 2015).…”

“…That is, the advantages of online education associate with frustration among the participants. Indeed, previous studies have indicated several limitations of online learning both, technological and psychological, especially online meetings during a pandemic were more stressing for students (Antonello et al, 2020). However, this study suggests more evidence of teachers' difficulties in participating "as students" in distance learning.…”

“…It seems that this criticism involved an inevitable comparison to face-to-face meetings. Previous studies have argued that technology enables facilitators and teachers more management and control than in face-to-face meetings (Antonello et al, 2020). For example, facilitators can mute all participants when discussions are out of hand, and they can control participants entering and leaving the group.…”
