Hepatitis C: clinical and biological features related to different forms of cocaine use

Abstract: Data suggest that cocaine use could be associated with HCV infection due to the specificities of cocaine consumption pattern, even in those subjects who do not inject drugs, in addition to other risky behaviors, such as tattooing and unprotected sex. Injectable cocaine users seem to be more susceptible to contamination than users who do not inject drugs. However, evidence is pointing to the possibility of infection by sharing drug paraphernalia other than syringes. Moreover, specific immune system impairments … Show more

“…A significant reduction in interleukin (IL)-2 and an increase in anti-inflammatory transforming growth factor (TGF)-beta1, together with a diminution in the number of total lymphocytes, CD4 and natural killer (NK) cells, were found in the MDMA–cannabis group, with intermediate alterations in the cannabis group [ 140 ]. Cocaine use has been associated with a significant lowering in mitogen-induced lymphocyte proliferation, decreased cytokine formation, the impairment of dendritic cells, loss of T-cell stimulation, and impaired antibody formation [ 141 ]. A significant decrease in peripheral lymphocytes coupled with a significant increase in serum IgG, IgA and IgM was noted in the drug addicts [ 142 ].…”

“…Aproximadamente 170 milhões de pessoas em todo o mundo estejam infectadas pelo vírus da hepatite C, contudo sendo a maioria dos casos assintomáticos, mostrando também uma distribuição variável entorno do globo (Schuch-Goi et al, 2017). A transmissão do vírus da Hepatite C ocorre principalmente pelo sangue ou por material que esteja contaminado, sendo mais associado atualmente por exposição percutânea e por toxicómanos intravenosos (agulhas hipodérmicas e seringas).…”
