Knowledge of biodiversity in oligotrophic aquatic ecosystems is fundamental to plan conservation strategies for protected areas. This study assessed the diatom diversity from an urban reservoir with oligotrophic conditions. The Piraquara I reservoir is located in an Environmental Protection Area and is responsible for the public supply of Curitiba city and the metropolitan region. Samples were collected seasonally between October 2007 and August 2008. Periphytic samples were obtained by removing the biofilm attached to Polygonum hydropiperoides stems and to glass slides. The taxonomic study resulted in the identification of 87 diatom taxa. The most representative genera regarding the species richness were Pinnularia (15 species) and Eunotia (14 species). Five species were registered for the first time in Brazil and seven in the State of Paraná. Taxonomic and ecological comments of the species registered are provided.

This study evaluated soft-bodied benthic algae from seven streams located in protected areas of central Brazil (Parque Nacional de Brasília, Parque Nacional da Chapada dos Veadeiros and Parque Estadual de Terra Ronca), and related them to abiotic factors. We addressed the following questions: A) how algal community structure in Cerrado streams is influenced by the marked seasonality typical of the region; and B) how karst geology influences algal communities in Parque Estadual de Terra Ronca, as compared to streams in other Cerrado areas. Samples were collected between 2012 and 2013 from a single site in each stream, and upstream and downstream of caves present in Parque Estadual de Terra Ronca. Altogether, 159 taxa were recorded. Algal community structure varied significantly among sites, but not between seasons, despite relatively lower abundances during the rainy season, likely due to a negative influence of the faster currents in streams during this period. Some alkaliphilic species were observed only at sites near caves (e.g. the cyanobacterium Tolypothrix distorta), while acidophilic taxa were more frequent in the other streams (e.g. desmids and Cyanobacteria such as Scytonema caldarium, Hapalosiphon stuhlmannii and Stigonema ocellatum). We observed a rare green alga, Microthamnion kuetzingianum, and reported the cyanobacterium Rivularia aquatica for the first time in Brazil.

RESUMO -Este estudo teve como objetivo inventariar as espécies do gênero Gomphonema Ehrenberg presentes no perifíton em córregos prístinos situados no Parque Nacional de Brasília, no Parque Nacional da Chapada dos Veadeiros e no Parque Estadual de Terra Ronca, localizados na Região Centro-Oeste do Brasil. As amostragens foram realizadas entre os anos de 2012 e 2013 (estações chuvosa e seca), e o perifíton foi coletado em sete diferentes substratos, sempre que presentes (seixos, silte, tronco de árvore, macrófitas, areia, folhiço e raiz) e períodos sazonais. Um total de 10 táxons foi identificado. A espécie Gomphonema sp.2 ocorreu em todos os córregos analisados. Gomphonema lagenula e G. brasiliense foram as espécies que apresentaram maior frequência de ocorrência em ambos os períodos sazonais. Este estudo contribuiu com três citações pioneiras para a Região Centro-Oeste (G. brasiliense subsp. pacificum, G. laticollum e G. pseudoaugur).Palavras-chave: diatomáceas, parques nacionais e estadual, perifíton, taxonomia ABSTRACT -Gomphonema Ehrenberg (Bacillariophyta) of pristine streams in the Brazilian Cerrado. This study aimed to survey the species of Gomphonema Ehrenberg in pristine Cerrado streams located in the Brasilia National Park, Chapada dos Veadeiros National Park and Terra Ronca State Park, located in the midwestern region of Brazil. Samples were taken between the years 2012 and 2013 (rainy and dry seasons), with the periphyton collected from seven different substrates, whenever they were present (pebbles, silt, tree trunk, macrophytes, sand, leaf litter and root). We identified 10 taxa in this study. The species Gomphonema sp.2 was present in all streams, and G. lagenula and G. brasiliense were the species with the highest frequency of occurrence in both seasonal periods. This study contributed with three species cited for the first time for the midwestern region (G. brasiliense subsp. pacificum, G. laticollum and G. pseudoaugur).
