The phylum Arthropoda is one of the most diverse groups under the terrestrial surface comprising different classes of insects that occupy different environments. Some groups have a close relationship with the habitat they occupy, responding significantly to changes in the environment, thus indicating the level of change in the environment by their presence or absence. The present study aimed to demonstrate the importance of edaphic fauna as a bioindicator of environmental quality. This is a bibliographic review based on specialized consultation of scientific articles in the databases Google Scholar, SciELO-Scientific Electronic Library and ResearchGate. The studies found that environmental quality can be measured from the diversity and abundance of arthropods that live and perform their functions in the soil. Macrofauna influences important soil chemical and physical processes such as nutrient cycling, structuring and homogenization, and increased productivity, among others. The mesofauna, besides acting on soil properties, acts on the regulation of microbial populations, is sensitive to changes and responds promptly. The groups Acari, Collembola, Coleoptera, Hymenoptera and Araneae are indicated in several studies as potential bioindicators because they are commonly sampled in different environments. The factors identified as conditioning factors of the presence of these groups are environmental heterogeneity, type of vegetation cover and availability of litter, applied management system, seasonality, soil characteristics, and anthropic activities, among others. In short, because they respond quickly, the changes are considered to be efficient biological indicators; therefore, knowing the diversity of species and their degree of interaction with the environment allows us to analyze the effects of anthropic modifications in ecosystems.Resumo: O filo Arthropoda é um dos grupos mais diversos da superfície terrestre, compreendendo diferentes classes de insetos que ocupam diversos ambientes. Alguns grupos, entretanto, apresentam relação estreita com o habitat que ocupam, respondendo de forma significativa às modificações no ambiente, o que acaba indicando o nível de alteração desse mesmo ambiente através de sua presença ou ausência. O presente estudo objetivou demonstrar a importância da fauna edáfica como bioindicadora de qualidade ambiental. Trata-se de uma revisão bibliográfica baseada em consulta especializada de artigos científicos nos bancos de dados Google Acadêmico, SciELO-Scientific Eletronic Library e ResearchGate. Os trabalhos encontrados apontaram que a qualidade ambiental pode ser mensurada a partir da diversidade e abundância de artrópodes que vivem e desempenham suas funções no solo. Forest management can lead to numerous changes of different magnitudes in the composition and diversity of soil organisms, according to the level of interference with the habitat. Within this context, this study aimed to test the influence of different types of forest management on the edaphic macrofauna community in a region of arboreal Caatinga. The study was carried out in Contendas do Sincorá National Forest, Contendas do Sincorá - Bahia. The experimental area consisted of three types of management (clear cutting, selective cutting by diameter at breast height and selective cutting by species), and a condition of unmanaged Caatinga, which was used as control. The macrofauna was sampled twice a year (March and November) using the soil monolith method. Densities, total number of individuals, total richness, average richness, and Shannon and Pielou rates were estimated. The soil macrofauna was shown to be sensitive to different forest management practices, which indicates that selective cutting is a more conservative system to manage the Caatinga. Among these, selective cutting by species proved to be less impacting on the soil macrofauna, providing more expressive diversity and abundance indexes, and the occurrence of more demanding organisms in microclimate conditions, characteristic of preserved areas. The predominant groups of edaphic fauna, both in the unmanaged as in managed Caatinga, were Isoptera, Formicidae, Chilopoda, and Coleoptera Larvae.

O objetivo do trabalho foi caracterizar a fauna de invertebrados edáficos em áreas com distintas quanto a cobertura vegetal e uso do solo. Foram amostradas três áreas do Ifes Campus de Alegre: 1 - monocultivo de café (MC); 2 – área em recuperação com plantio de espécies nativas (FP) e; 3 - área com fragmento de floresta nativa (FES). Foram realizadas 3 amostragens com intervalo de 30 dias, entre os meses de março a maio de 2015. Em cada amostragem foram utilizadas 5 armadilhas dispostas em linhas espaçadas em 10 m. Foram estimados os índices ecológicos para cada uma das áreas. Pela utilização de análise estatística multivariada as áreas foram comparadas em relação à ocorrência de invertebrados. Houve maior riqueza nas áreas com maior diversidade vegetal bem como melhor distribuição dos organismos quanto ao nível trófico. O estudo demonstrou que a área FES apresentou maior equilíbrio ecológico em relação às demais. Há necessidade da adoção de práticas de conservação do solo na área cultivada com café.
